Chewy's Spicy Onion Salad (Deluxe)
I love Indian Pickles.
BIR Restaurants have been using Pataks Pickles for many years and are hard to beat,
many members may know there taste if they order the pickle tray and poppadoms as an appetizer at their favourite local.
Well here's the twist, just like spooning a mixture of everything onto a poppadom and crunching away on the mix of flavours.
After taking the lead from a Chef friend of mine, I thought, why not combine everything into a onion salad and WoW, what a flavour explosion.

What you need, Lime Pickle, Mixed Pickle, Green Chilli Pickle, Mango Chutney,
Colmans Garden Mint Sauce. White Onion, Red Onion, Green Capsicum, Cucumber, Tomato.

Serve up with Poppadom or Puffed Rice (Muri) and enjoy.
It lasts a few days in the fridge and it just seems to get better with age.

Got to be a winner Chewy as you said Its what you do normally
while waiting for your starters or mains a spoon full of each on a poppadom
making a mess
One thing missing pint of larger

Brilliant!
As Michael says, most of us end up with a bit of everything mixed up on a plate anyway, and while I've often mixed mango chutney into my onion salad at home, I've never tried bunging in the rest of the pickles.
That's about to change!
Thanks CT

Looks delicious! Definitely going to give this one a try. Thanks for the recipe!

The green chilli pickle is that made by Pataks? Managed to get the other ones - I got a supermarket jar of green chillies in brine, would that be okay or just leave it out? Mince them?

You could chop up some brined green chillies, but you won't get the same flavour as you get from chilli pickle, which contains mustard, fenugreek, turmeric, and asafoetida. But better to have some chilli in there than none at all, I'd say.
As Chewy says, most BIRs use Pataks pickles, and their chilli pickle is a decent one, but there are plenty of other good brands available, and they're all variations on the same theme. I'm currently using one from an Indian brand (Ashoka, which is made in Gujarati). It has more chillies in than many (60%), and is tasty but a little on the salty side.

Cheers Salvador. Thanks for the help!

What did you try that was similar Severige? A little more explanation would be helpful, maybe some photos of your talents.

Mmmmmmm Nice One :D

always a winner on a buffet.

I will definitely be trying this one out Chewy. It looks delicious.

This is a really good salad / side CT. I made a batch up for NYE Tandoor night and it was a hit. Added to some Chicken Tikka or Lamb Kebab in a Roti with a touch of minted cucumber raita the combined wrap is delicious. While I couldn't get Patak's pickles in the time frame, I did manage to find Ashoka brand and actually used a Chilli Lime variety instead of the 2 individuals. I also added a big handful of chopped coriander leaf. It wont be the last time I make this up.

Happy New Year Livo
This became a good money spinner in the restaurant.
Even better at home with your own choice of favourite Indian pickles and chutneys
so many variations possible.
Glad you gave it a try ;) ;D

Chewy, it's my wedding anniversary today and to give my wife a little surprise I cooked a Sri Lankan inspired breakfast for her (and myself). Biththrara Appam (Egg hopper), fried mushroom and bacon served with a side of this spicy onion salad (cut up fine sambal style). Absolutely delicious. Next time I'll put up a photograph.
Thanks to Phil as well for posting the link to this site, on which I found this page https://aussietaste.com.au/breakfast/egg-hopper-biththara-appam/ (https://aussietaste.com.au/breakfast/egg-hopper-biththara-appam/)

Egg Hoppers and Chewy's Spicy Onion Salad for breakfast again yesterday.

Looks an interesting and tasty summer breakfast Livo ;)
It was the first snow for me this morning and traditionally, had Porrige Oats ;D
cheers Chewy

Quite simple to make. Very tasty and, if you could wait long enough to photograph it, looks good plated up. I made my wife's with the addition on sliced mushroom in the egg cooking stage. Your salad really compliments the hoppers which are traditionally eaten with curries in Sri Lanka. This is a very nice breakfast and I'd imagine a hippy caf

Looks good to me, livo - must give it a go!

I cook the hoppers in an aluminium Balti pan and use a lid from a SS saucepan. I tried the small SS Balti pans but it didn't work.. You can buy proper Hopper Pans with lid but I don't have one. I used the recipe from the link Phil provided above but it was a bit thin so I added some plain flour and allowed it to sit overnight. I then recooked some after 4 days of the batter being in the fridge. Still fine.
