Title: Pop-up Screen
Post by: Les on November 29, 2018, 01:14 PM

Sorry about the size.

Yes.  I regular see it, accept it, dismiss it, ignore it.  Annoying, but not to the point where I swear at it, unlike those ******* pop-ups that grey out my entire screen only to ask if I am willing to take a "quick survey" at the end of my interaction.  Those drive me completely insane, and provoke some of the worst language of which I am capable.

Thanks Phil,
Can't imagine you sitting there swearing at the screen, whatever next young man. :)
Do you think Admin could get rid of it? .

I don't get that one but recently I've had multiple instances of my web browser redirecting to a completely different page with a pop-up window as well and my PC internal speaker screaming at me. All attempts to exit the window fail and I need to close the browser and restart it.  Very suggestive of Virus or Malware but it only ever happens on CRO.  The usual warnings of "errors found" and invitation to "fix it", accompanied by internal screaming is a bit worrisome but doesn't appear to anything at all really.  I've had far worse.

"Errors found" and an invitation to "fix it" are almost certainly indicative of malware.  At the very least I would run the Eset online scanner (https://www.eset.com/uk/home/online-scanner/), and if you don't already have it installed, install Malwarebytes Pro or Premium.  The cause could be a hijacked advertisement, but I never see these because I use Adblock Plus.

Well, I know Tom is aware of it, because when he first installed it it spoke to us in French (!), but he fixed that part so he may well be able to fix its rather annoying excesses.  I usually exit CR0 by going instead to Language Log, and it frequently pops up at that point.

I've been using MBAM for years.  This is not a frequent occurrence and is of nuisance value only. It has actually only been the last 2 months or so on about 6 occasions,  When I get some time and /or inclination I may investigate.

Hotstuff, Cookie alerts are the norm, since May 2018 EU Law.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Another set of rules coming from the EU that may change after Brexit.

With the excessive amount of advertising on this site and the fact it is not secure i.e. without an SSL certificate,
it could somehow be open to data gathering abuse.

Just click on this sites privacy settings and switch the alert off,
also click the reject all button,

With [...] the fact it is not secure i.e. without an SSL certificate ...

The CA Security Council awards grade-A compliance (https://casecurity.ssllabs.com/analyze.html?d=www.curry-recipes.co.uk) to all four IP domains associate with www.curry-recipes.co.uk (https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/)

Hello,
I am also annoyed  by this EU requirement regarding privacy warnings, but once you agree and save, it should not pop up for some time.
You shouldn't have any other popup ads. I will look into it, sometimes regular ads network get themeselves hijacked by popup networks.
Regarding https, well it's a bit like EU requirement, (not really usefull on a site like cro) but I'll do it sooner or later.

Edit: I have removed the privacy warning for logged in members, I'll assume they already read it...

It appears to already be there, Tom.  See previous message concerning compliance, and a copy of the URL through which I am replying :  https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?action=post;quote=131651;topic=15017.0;last_msg=131651

You're right Phil,
I just forgot to redirect all requests to https. Ok then  :)

You may want to check for (and fix) insecure embedded content first, Tom, otherwise those with paranoid browsers will see a message along the lines of "Insecure information on this page was blocked".  I now use URLs only of the form "///my.site.com/" (i.e., with no explicit protocol) for embedded content so that the protocol will default to that of the page in which the link is embedded.

Yes you're right, that must be why I didn't force https in the first place, now I remember.
Thanks
