Title: Great Barrier Reef: One million tonnes of sludge to be dumped
Post by: Bob-A-Job on February 28, 2019, 10:16 PM
It would seem that money talks and one of the seven wonders of the world wal..... isn't worth saving.

Sorry, just how I read it, I am not a marine biologist so I don't know the full impact of this but at a time when 'global warming'' is being implicated for the warming seas which ARE killing great sections of the reef, this is not going to help.

The sole purpose of this dredging is to keep "safe" access and clear shipping channels to the loading facilities for the huge amounts of Queensland coal being sent offshore.  A huge additional coal mine by Adani is currently in the wind and one accidental shipping fuel spill or storm event causing a grounding or other mishap could spell catastrophe for the already ailing reef.

This follows directly on from the previous thread and further illustrates the hypocritical stance of our Government in relation to big coal exports in the face of targeted reductions in CO2 emissions on home soil.  Again I ask, if the science on greenhouse gases, climate change and global warming is in, why are our politicians prepared to run this self contradictory scheme forcing restrictions on our own national consumption of coal while happily selling mega tonnes of it offshore.  It doesn't add up.
