Hello from South London
« on: July 29, 2018, 11:37 PM »
Hi,

I have been making bir curries for a few years now (first introduced to me by my uncle) and stumbled upon this website. Thought I would sign up as it looks interesting; hopefully learn something new and share some of my own knowledge with like minded curry enthusiasts.

OK, not a part I know well (apart from its proximity to the Crystal Palace, of course) but welcome aboard nonetheless :)  I am now living in deepest Cornwall, so local recommendations are not likely to be of use to me but may well be of use to others.  Are there any BIRs in the vicinity of South Norwood that you can recommend, or any that you would advise others to avoid ?  I remember that in Croydon there were one or two good Southern Indian restaurants

None of the bir's are any good in South Norwood but you are correct about nearby Croydon, there is Chat House (i believe has been there since the 70's) in South Croydon that make fantastic old school bir curries, then there is Vujon in Ashburton (Croydon) that does amazing tasting curries, not so old school but bir none the less and I also recommend Palace Spice in Crystal Palace, delicious curries.

To be honest most of the other British Indian restaurants that I have tried around here are not great, and there are a lot of them.

Hi , welcome,
I hail from Bromsgrove, Worcs. I absolutely love this site and can't believe the  information I've picked up over the few years I've been using it. My curries have improved immensely
There are quite a few curry houses around  here but I just cannot believe what they get away with the locals who generally haven't a clue what a real authentic curry should taste like We holiday in Goa for three months every year so have tasted proper curries.. Last week I went with friends to one local restaurant and ordered chicken  Chennai,(Madras hot) when it came it was five pieces of chicken in what appeared to be a base sauce that was  devoid of any heat or taste at all other than the quite bland taste of base sauce, I didn't send it back as they usually just add a spoonful of chilli powder to rectify it whenever I complain. My friend ordered 'her favourite' which appeared to look like a pizza, A plate of mince and chicken gravy with GRATED CHEESE SPRINKLED OVER THE TOP,, She was happy! My other friend had the usual 'chicken balti' another tasteless concoction. Needless to say, we go to the Birmingham Balti triangle for a decent curry, always to the same restaurant which was supposed to be the forerunner of baltis.

Come on, name names !  I may one day find myself lucky enough to be in the Balti Triangle (I was last in Brum long before the triangle came into existence) and I would like to think that I know where I should go ..

Hi, ok Phil the place I recommend in Brum is Adils, Stoney Lane. We have been going here for the last thirty odd years and still drive the thirty miles on a Saturday night to get a real authentic  Indian (although I believe they're from Pakistan) meal. http://www.adilbalti.co.uk/about/ You won't be disappointed!
