An open letter to Pippi Långstrump
« on: November 23, 2018, 01:08 PM »
A thread started in the "recipes" area of the forum which contains no recipe. An epic topic drift into a discussion about balti.... and of course not a single visible admin or moderator (as usual).  Just another normal day on the forum!

Dear Pippi — thank you for yet another of your helpful and insightful posts, which (as always) provides invaluable information on the staff curries and balti dishes that others are discussing.

As regards the seeming absence of "a visible admin or moderator", I can assure CR0 members that (in my experience), use of the "report to moderator" button leads to immediate removal of spam (etc) as soon as it is reported — that option is therefore always open to you.  However, it seems quite possible to me that neither admin nor moderator feel it their duty to intervene in a discussion which is being conducted in a polite and respectful manner, regardless of whether or not the discussion is strictly relevant to the section or thread in which it is being conducted.

If you feel otherwise,  perhaps you might want to consider defecting to "the other place". where fellow anal-retentives worship at the altar of the antipodean demigod, and where the slightest deviation from on-topic discussion can lead to public rebuke and permanent revocation of membership.

Internet forums are the same all over. The same empassioned discussions are a recurring theme. The focus area of the forum and from that, the nature of the participating members is variable but the inherent problems are the same.

Off-topic comments and hijacking of threads is problematic, but the judgement of this is subjective. It simply is not possible to contain threads without overbearing moderation.

The use of unedited "quotes" and even worse and more lazy, nested quotes is a huge problem if allowed to run unchecked. I've seen a whole forum Page of a thread taken up by a single post that contained multiple layers of nested recursive quotes.

Unfortunately, this is not going to ever change as far as I can tell.  It is just how this type of board has evolved. I understand the frustration felt by some, and occasionally feel it myself. Then I'll openly admit that I'm also sometimes a part of the problem. Not to my own thinking at the time of posting, but certainly upon reflection after the event. I'm sure nearly everybody is in the same boat unless they are on permanent gaurds against such folly.

A Public Forum is never going to be as systematically arranged as some would like. There is little point getting upset over it but it is encumbent on all to at least try to avoid known organisational pitfalls. Easier said than done from my own experience.
Whiskey is the answer, but what was the question?
