5 day old base in fridge - would you eat it?
« on: March 20, 2012, 01:43 PM »
Just checked the fridge this morning and I've left 400 ml of CAs new easy base recipe in there. This evening it will be 5 days old and has been stored covered up.

If it smells ok I'll probably eat it. What do others think?

Cheers,

Paul

Phil probably wouldn't eat it on the basis it's not mature (mouldy) enough  ;) personally I would give it a quick boil and use as normal.

So would I (and regularly do). The nose is king in such matters!

I find a more mature base tends to darken in colour, but a quick whizz with a hand blender before bringing to the boil can have an impressively restorative effect.

Thanks guys - I'll test it with my nose and give it a good boil.  :)

You'll know if it's off, as it will have a certain smell, be slimy and will have a
background taste when you make a any curry from it. Probably not kill you though. ;D ;D ;D

I just found this:

5 days should be fine, there are no meat or dairy products in the base.

Cheers,

Paul

If it's been refrigerated the whole time, I can't see a problem. As others have said....trust your nose. :)

I agree - and also add half a teaspoon of mixed powder or curry powder (depending on the amount of base left) whiz up, boil - cook make curry, great

test it with your nose - if it smells get shut.

i'm well pleased with myself that my last base ended up having to last 10 days and was just as good as the 1st dish out of it.
