This might help :-\
Every one on this forum will not get along for one reason or another
and it doesn't help we really don't know each other personally only just through this forum
I also think things get lost in emails and texting
If we all met up in one curry house I'm sure we would have a laugh or a great punch up ;D
Obviously everyone lives to far away :'( and this is unlikely to happen
So I am willing to travel to meet for a curry
I Live in London and would say for one night travel to Birmingham to meet up
Anyone up for it Im not saying Birmingham is the place
The place would be where most people would be willing to travel
Come on get off your arses :)
Cheers MT
-
Table for one please
-
Lovely idea mate but, 200 mile from me :-\
-
We haven't chosen a place yet Chris ;)
-
Stay in London and I'll join you there, or come to Kent and sample the local version of BIR ?
** Phil.
-
We haven't chosen a place yet Chris ;)
whoops am bad would love to meet phil and gazman :-X
-
Great idea MT - would think being in Dundee, Scotland rules me out a bit - maybe ;)
-
I'll be in Bordeaux from Wednesday for a week. Feel free to join me.
Wear a big floppy hat or something so I'll recognise you :)
-
Thank you Garp and SL :'(
I know this is a hard task but how far are you curry lovers willing to travel
and SL if it was Dundee I would be there :)
-
SL
That would a very costly curry but hopefully worth it :)
-
Lovely idea mate but, 200 mile from me :-\
Birmingham is actually about 100 miles from that dodgy takeaway of yours Chris. ;D Seriously though, great idea SL! Obvious venues possibly would be London, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, or Newcastle. I'm easy. Perhaps see who's up for it and then pick somewhere based on where the majority would prefer. Be nice to get Mick, Julian, and CA along as well. Chewy and Phil must come.
Rob :)
-
To be honest, I can't think of anything worse.
I mean, it's bad enough having to read some of the crap spouted by some of the people on here without having to sit and watch them spout it :P
-
Take that has a no Garp ;)
-

Come on Garp. You're just still hurtin' because someone said one of your curries looked like corned dog, or something. A thick skin is a must on forum. Spot the banter. Suggest somewhere nice for the meet-up now. You know you want to.
Rob :)
-
Corned beef Rob lol.
I suggest Dumfries
-
Thanks Bob
This will happen even just a table for two
Me and Bob so far
Red or white Bob ?
-
Stay in London and I'll join you there
I'll be happy to meet you, Michael, Bob and anyone else who wants to come along, in London. Perhaps down Brick Lane - not that I've ever had a very memorable curry down there.
It's a good idea and simple enough to get off the ground. Several regional meetings might be easier to arrange than anyone travelling hundreds of miles.
-
Thank you George
Table for 3 hopefully
-
Brick Lane would be ace!
Rob :)
-
Thanks Bob. This will happen even just a table for two. Me and Bob so far. Red or white Bob ?
Phil said "yes" some time back :
Stay in London and I'll join you there, or come to Kent and sample the local version of BIR ?
** Phil.
-
How about a magical mystery curry tour.
Rent a coach and a driver and travel the uk picking up members and curries along the way. ;D
(http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/pics/3ef55736028d0615d4597e567b1268cf.jpg)
-
Thank you George
Table for 3 hopefully
If i'm welcomed, table for 4. Just say if i'm not
-
Sorry Phil
Table for 5
depending on venue
Great idea Frank ;D ;D
-
I suggest Dumfries
Dumfries is a good shout Garp - it would have to be the Cavens though and not that BIR further along the road.
-
Bradford would be good - no shortage of curry places to choose from and as I recall the Samarkand in Heckmondwicke is good.
-
Thank you George
Table for 3 hopefully
If i'm welcomed, table for 4. Just say if i'm not
I'll be very pleased to meet you, the other 3 (so far) and anyone else who can make it.
So London zooms into the lead (table for 5) currently with Michael, Phil, Bob. curryhell and George (me)
I'm sure it could expand up to nearer 10 people by the time we meet. When? Brick Lane has the additional potential advantage for us of being able to wander around some large Asian stores, to see what we can find, point out to each other and stock up.
-
Lol Steve - I thought the Palms was quite good. Cavens is a good shout though - definitely not BIR :)
-
Bradford would be good - no shortage of curry places to choose from and as I recall the Samarkand in Heckmondwicke is good.
Blinking heck never thought i would here about Samies on here
spent hundreds of hours there and in the Old Hall in Hecky another Samies (Sam Smiths ) used to have a taste for that Ayingerbrau Lager we used to drink many many many the stagger across the road to the local curry house for a change - we got great service - memories of yester year - loved every minuet!
best, Rich
-
To be fair It doesn't have to be one venue
could be 3
one in London another in the midlands and one up north
Then people can decide how far they want to travel
Personally I would go to the London one and also travel to the others they obviously do not have to be
all on the same day
Just a thought If it makes easier for everynoe
-
I hope you all have a great time.
BTW, are any of the members still on this site that had the
curry in the park (well that's what I would call it) meet up,
its was about 2 years ago?
They all seemed to have a canny time together.
-
Yes I was at the curry-in-the-park meet and it was very pleasant.
-
Thanks natterjak.
I hope this meet up works out for those attending :)
-
I started a similar thread a few months back suggesting the Manchester curry mile, a couple of people were up for it, but I didn't get around to arranging anything.
Still up for it, especially if we can get access to the kitchen and see an expert at work!
-
I'm in, Sabzi Rogan Josh please!
I've been out on curry mile about 25 years ago (18 at the time). Got one of the hottest possible at the 'Shezan' is it still there?
Asked before to see in the kitchen, not usually met with open arms....... ???
-
I will just refresh this thread for a week or so to see if there are any more who wish to join up for a curry
At the moment it looks very London based apart from you Bob ;)
So well see how it goes and hopefully have a few more takers
PS it should be a great food fight ;D
-
I'm in for any meet ups in Cambridge or Birmingham, given enough notice for me to book the flights at an acceptable price.
-
How's this going? It's a great idea. If anyone's up for a Birmingham leg I'm thinking of a positively mind-blasting itinerary.
Rob :)
-
Right
Its time to book the table :)
I'm happy to travel and would happily take up your offer Bob
With a trip to Birmingham
I know most interest was in the london area but lets see how it pans out ( theres a joke there :'()
I think a Friday night would be good in my opinion
Come on fellows
Drinks on me :o
-
I'll have to pass on a Brummie Currie (too far and too expensive) but if anyone wants to follow up on this idea and arrange a curry night in either London or Kent, I would be up for that one (other commitments permitting).
** Phil.
-
Excellent! I'll put together an idea or two (or three) for Birmingham. All within 3 miles of Birmingham New Street train station and Digbeth coach station. I'll include a suggestion for an optional afternoon (light) lunch, for anyone who has the time, and would like to make more of a day of it. There's lots of curry-related things to see hereabouts. I'll also bring my chef friend along who loves a chat about all things curry. Evening meal. As it's Birmingham I reckon a balti is a must-have. I am thinking Kushi.
Rob :)
-
count me in for a trip to Birmingham. those pics of Bengali Bob have rejuvenated balti for me
-
Go for it Bob sounds great
Lets hope for a descent response :)
-
Table for 3
Come on we can do better than that ;D
-
I will be driving up from London surrey
If it helps i don't mind picking anyone up on route
-
Only joined the group yesterday but if the date is correct I should be able to make it.
-
Great stuff. I'm still putting a menu together for the optional afternoon lunch/sight-seeing tour, before the main event in the evening. But, we'll be starting off on Coventry Rd, at the heart of Birmingham's Bangla town, before moving on to the wonders of Stratford Rd. From here, it's just a short pilgrimage on foot (weather permitting) to the Balti Triangle. Yay! I'm getting excited already!
Rob :)
-
Come on fellas don't miss out there's not many places left ;D
-
Might get more response if we go for a Chinese ;D
come on fellows its not about the curry it would be nice to see some faces to go with the names
surely your all not that ugly :o
Hop aboard the curry bus
Table for 5 would be nice
-
Might get more response if we go for a Chinese ;D
Probably not MT, unless of course we're talking China town :P
come on fellows its not about the curry it would be nice to see some faces to go with the names
Now that really depends on the individuals, doesn't it ::) Joking aside, best
-
No reason why a southern curry cant be done as well CH
A few of my friends went to the restaurant Brilliant which I would like to try
Not to sure where it is but it got good reviews
-
No reason why a southern curry cant be done as well CH
What's happened to the idea - first off the blocks - of a meeting in East London? It seems almost like that's been dropped as Birmingham came up out of nowhere.
-
Would love to go to Brum and meet up with Rob, Jerry and any others based that way, but the minimum 5 hour turn around time for the journey is just too much ... If the Brum event gets off the ground, hope you all have a great time ... I'll await news of any southern gathering
I'm with CH there; Birmingham, even though I went there every weekend for 2 1/2 years, is just too far to go for a curry (I used to go there for a woman, which is quite a different matter !) -- Kent, London, Surrey or Sussex would be perfect.
** Phil.
-
To celebrate our fast new trains, we
-
Obviously Bobs' organizing a Birmingham trip which im happy to go to
in also happy to go to a London one as well :)
so in Birmingham we have a table for 3
And lets have a show of hands for the London one again
-
And lets have a show of hands for the London one again
One hand raised here.

Very good spot Frank :o :o
Just looked at this thread:
http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/topic,4472.0.html (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/topic,4472.0.html)
The shops are trully Aladdin's caves ::) ::) I could easily spend a small fortune in there ;D And the food looks damn tasty
Count me in for London. May just have to have a poke round Brick Lane as i'm off next week ::) Give myself a little treat ;D
-

The pledges for London are hopefully the same as on 8 Sept. So that's 5 unless anyone has dropped out.
I don't think anyone is suggesting either/or. I see it as London plus Birmingham - different regions for different folks, or perhaps attend both/all gatherings if money and time are no object.
-
To celebrate our fast new trains, we
-
Amazing! How do you manage to find so much useful information?
I don't know how Frank found it (thank you, Frank) but one possible source is Hot UK Deals (http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?action=search&keywords=chiltern).
** Phil.
-
My sister sent me the link last month. She's always getting free theatre tickets and tv audience things, vouchers etc. :)
Swagbucks is one i remember her sending a while back which i havent really looked into yet.
-
Hi
Any dates been looked at for the Birmingham event. It's not far from stoke.
Regards
-
Not yet Commis
When Bobs back on the forum he can choose some dates for the Birmingham people
I think we will do some dates this week other wise it could drag on
-
I would be interested in a London meet, I'd be interested in having a few beers and a good curry. A Thursday would be best.
Be interesting to get feedback on the site and all that and maybe discuss some plans for the future of CR0.
Stew
-
A great addition to the curry night Stew
Oh yes a major curry coup to the table
Come an meet your leader The big paneer in full curry attire
As the man says A few beers and a good curry
Thats got to put bums on seats ;D
-
Provisional dates/options for the Birmingham bash coming very soon. I'm over the man flu. An ultra Ex-hot chicken vindaloo last night was ultimately its undoing. Trouble is I've not had an Ex-hot for a while, and am now recovering from that.
Rob :)
-
;D ;D
We call it Naan flu on here Bob :'(
-
Here we go then.
BIRMINGHAM
Afternoon session (late lunch). 3.00 pm (or thereabouts)
We can meet up at the fabulous Misti Desh on Coventry Road:
http://mishtidesh.co.uk/ (http://mishtidesh.co.uk/)
546-546 Coventry Road, Small Heath Birmingham, B10 0UN.
Great little place this. Very relaxed. Popular with the local Bengali community the food is excellent and good value for money. The menu is extensive ranging from, for example, traditional meat/veg samosa, or shingara, with salad and dips (

Crikey. I can only say that a part of me is glad it is too far to travel. The idea of eating that many times in so few hours blows my mind -- if I were to attempt it, it would almost certainly blow my stomach as well !
** Phil.
-
This was always going to be the next hurdle for people dates
get over this one and were there :)
I can do Fri 18 , 25 and may be the 26 Oct
-
1st and 2 nd Nov best for me, then fridays, then Saturdays. will go with majority.
the only Saturday that really fits is 23 Nov.
ps will probably drive down to flexibility
-
Im away for Half term so 1st and 2nd Nov a no After this weekend fairly free
London boys throw in your dates Stew did say a Thursday . Im flexible
-
London / Kent, Thursdays only (I can do other days; this assumes that Stew cannot) --

November: 7/14/21
December: 5/12

I'll probably just have a samosa for lunch Phil. They are actually quite big samosas. Just thought to outline what's available. You never know though. The limitless tandoori lamb chops and chicken tikka achari at the Misti may prove irresistible. I would of course then dispense with any starters in the evening, and just get stuck into the balti(s). Honest!
Rob :)
-
a ... quite big samosa ... tandoori lamb chops ... chicken tikka achar... balti(s).
(sound of abdominal wall giving way) :)

Blimey! Never had you down as a lightweight Phil. Just goes to show. I thought you'd be more of a rotund, Captain Mainwaring type, curry connoisseur.

There is little doubt that both appetite and capacity diminish with age. If I go out with a friend for a Tuesday night special (or if we have a Wednesday night special to take away) there is usually at least 50% left for another day. Or if I have a Wednesday night special for myself, it usually lasts three days.
** Phil.
-
It happens to us all Phil. But every now and then it's good to get the wind in your hair, again. It is after all a curry forum curry night. Can't expect everyone to sit there in the Kushi with just a pot of low fat yoghurt in front of them, surely?
Rob :)
-
Sounds like I might have to stay the night I wouldn't be able to resist alcohol

Absolutely not, and I hope I didn't come across as suggesting that was what people should do. If they can manage a late lunch, a later mid-afternoon snack, and an early-evening dinner, then more power to them. I was just saying that any one of the three would do me :)
** Phil.
-
Only jesting Phil. Obviously everyone can eat as much or little as they like. There'll be separate bills either way. :D Must say I'm looking forward to a few sherbets as the evening goes on. I don't usually drink much alcohol, but as Stephen has generously offered it would be rude not to ;D. Hopefully we can get a tour of the kitchen. That would be nice.
Rob :)

Just a reminder for people to get their dates down
For the London or Birmingham curry bash or both
5 on each table would be nice Remember free Beer for the first 5 on each table :P

My suggestion would be 05 Dec for a pre-Xmas get together.
-
My suggestion would be 05 Dec for a pre-Xmas get together.
It's a nice idea, but by three weeks before Christmas the restaurants are already getting Christmas party bookings, during which period the quality is likely to suffer because of pressure on the staff dealing with a higher number of covers than usual; my suggestion would be to bring it forward to at least five or six weeks before Christmas. What do others think ?

I didn't think of that but you might be right. What about 14 Nov, then?

14th Nov. fine by me, and pencilled in.

Please re-confirm.

Is Brick Lane definite, George ? Given the very large number of establishments there, some of which will undoubtedly be cashing in on the reputation of the better ones and taking advantage of the massive tourist trade, I had rather hoped that we would meet at a restaurant that one of our number was willing to personally vouch for ... One possibility that I had in mind was the Agra, in Whitfield Street (less than 5 minutes walk from Warren Street tube station) which is the very first restaurant in which I ate tandoori chicken (somewhere in the period 1966 -- 1970) and which is still receiving very positive reviews in Trip Advisor. It is now owned and run by the son of the proprietor whom I knew, but it would appear to still be run on the same lines, with the focus primarily on good traditional BIR fare.
** Phil.
-
Come on chaps, November 14th is now only just over two weeks away, and at the moment there are just two of us definitely attending. Michael, this was your idea : are you in ? And what about Stew, who said he would be interested in a London meet-up ? And there must be other London / Home Counties members who would like to share a meal together. Current plan is to start either in London Chinatown or Brick Lane, for a viewing/shopping expedition, followed by dinner at the Agra, Whitfield Street (the place that turned me on to Tandoori Chicken almost 50 years ago; still in the same family ownership, albeit now 2nd generation, and still getting rave reviews on Trip Advisor).
** Phil.
-
Don't worry Phil im in
spending half term with the family and a few friends in Cornwall (Perranporth) this week
Back the weekend with a final push for bums on seats next week
Cheers Michael
-
Just learned that a dear friend's funeral will take place that day, at 11:00 and 14:00 in deepest Kent. Apologies in advance but I will be unable to meet in the afternoon but can join you late afternoon / early evening.
** Phil.
-
Sorry chaps, but I'll have to decline any mid-week festivity due to travel complications and the fact that I still have to go to work the next morning. A gathering on a Saturday would really be the only option for me. But enjoy the get together if the Thursday eve goes ahead.
-
That could be the same type of flavour I like in a dhansak. If we meet next week and I order a dhansak, we should be able to see. But it currently looks like only three of us for London (pathetic!). I think it was only moved to Thursday, because that was Stew's preference but, as he hasn't responded, perhaps he can't make it, in which case why don't we move the get-together to a Saturday so that curryhell might be able to join us?
Fine by me. I have a cremation and funeral service on that day anyway, so would not be wonderful company over dinner. Let's go for a weekend by all means, but do bear in mind that the good places will be busy then, so we will want to check opening hours and get there shortly after they open for evening service. Also let's not let it slip too far, or we wil be into the pre-Christmas build-up.
** Phil.
-
yes ok for me to move to a Saturday
would be nice to get at least a small group :)
-
A gathering on a Saturday would really be the only option for me. But enjoy the get together if the Thursday eve goes ahead.
Thursday the 14th is now cancelled then, in favour of a Saturday which hopefully you and a few others can make, in central London. I propose Sat 23rd Nov, meeting at about 5.00pm so we might walk into Phil's recommended BIR quite early at, say, 6pm.
-
I should be at "Horsmonden has Talent" that night (as assistant sound engineer) and I don't know if I can get out of it; what about Saturday 16th, which is completely clear ?
** Phil.
-
what about Saturday 16th, which is completely clear ?
OK, let's meet on Sat 16th Nov. Michael - can you make that day? Curryhell? Stew? Anyone else?
-
OK, let's meet on Sat 16th Nov. Michael - can you make that day? Curryhell? Stew? Anyone else?
With a little bit of shuffling, I may just be able to make this providing we're outside waiting for them to unlock the doors and let us in ;D Will confirm for sure a little later in the week.

I'm sorry but I can't now make the 16th Nov, after all, so it's now looking like another Saturday, later this month, or early next.
-
Right obviously Christmas coming up and dates are getting crossed off so it may be hard to get
the people we need to make this happen :)
But I'm not giving up yet so keep throwing in the dates until we get ( would like to have 5ish) a few yeses
Bob keep pressing for the Birmingham trip I'm up for that. Again dates was always going to be a stumbling block
Personally I work in the building trade and have 2 weeks off at Christmas and after boxing day I have plenty spare time up until new years eve but that's me
So come on well keep trying otherwise this thread will be longest thread in the history of threads :)
Cheers Michael
-
30th Nov it is then for the London bash
So far 4 lucky people have confirmed
If anyone else wishes to join us feel free ( like the beer ;))
Don't miss out something you may regret :)
Cheers Michael
Over to you Bob :)
-
I'm on it. I'm thinking.
Rob :)
-
The day is nearly here for the London bash its still not too late to join us for tomorrows curry :)
Now I don't want anyone letting the forum down so smart dress and clean shaven
So Phil get a hair cut and a long soak ;D
And George as you are shopping first leave the high heels at home ;)
CH I do hope you can make it and if do please leave the samosas and onion bhajis at home
we don't want you showing up the Restaurant ;D
Looking forward to meeting you all
Cheers Michael
-
So Phil get a hair cut and a long soak ;D
Ah, bliss -- just liike being back in the SAS again. Those were the days ... :)
And yes, really looking forward to tomorrow; having cooked my own curry tonight, it will be great to try a professional's tomorrow and see how they compare. And if Bengali Bob and/or Curryhell /can/ make it (or anyone else, for that matter) it would be great to see you.
** Phil.
-
Have a great time guys. Looking forward to the reports. New date(s) for the Birmingham bash shortly.
Rob :)
-
It was great. My sincere thanks to George and Michael for their company; I think we all enjoyed it enormously, would like to repeat it in the future, and hope very much that more will feel motivated to join us next time. The food at the Agra was not quite up to their 60's standards (the dhansak in particular was a disappointment) but the tandoori dishes were superb, as was the lamb biryani : perfectly spiced and without a trace of dryness. We ordered too much (of course) but shared everything and had a great time. The ambience was greatly enhanced by our friendly and welcoming hostess, dressed in traditional Indian style.
** Phil.
-
It was great. .. I think we all enjoyed it enormously, would like to repeat it in the future, and hope very much that more will feel motivated to join us next time.
I agree. Many thanks to you and Michael for taking the effort to meet up. It was a pleasure to meet you both.
We pinned on badges reading "CRO" to help identify each other when meeting in the street. But Phil arrived early and thought some other bloke looked a bit like I'd described myself, so he want up to him and asked if he was 'George'!
To the hundreds of other reasonably active members, what are your reasons for not wanting to meet for a curry (personal crises and other commitments aside)? I thought it was a great idea of Michael's and I'm surprised only three of us turned up in London.
It also makes you realise that everyone is human and not just some virtual identity to be rude to on here.
-
well done to the three of you for meeting up alas a London jaunt was beyond my scope.
-
alas a London jaunt was beyond my scope.
Fully understood, Stephen. These things have to be regional, by definition, and there are surely more than enough of you north of the border to have a Scots meetup. I am now over-committed until well into the New Year, but I certainly hope we can repeat our London meetup after that, and I've promised to check out Vijay's in advance to make sure that it still lives up to their traditional standards. And then there's the Raja of Kent in Tenterden, if enough of our Kentish members are interested ...
** Phil.
-
Sounds good Phil and look forward to your reports of these restaurants.
-
Thank you Fellow curry members for turning up :)
Everyone Scrubbed up alright not one whiff of a moth ball in sight ;)
I was touched and very emotional to receive my CRO curry badge when first met :) Thank you Phil
Just to let everyone know George is real and looks far too young has a sense of humour and laughs YES
Probably over done the lipstick though ;)
Seriously I would urge members to give it ago I can guarantee you it is worth the effort
Mind you I was a bit disappointed we didn't pop in to Spearmint Rhinos for a dance
Thanks for the company
Michael
-
OK troops. How about Saturday 28th December for the Birmingham bash? Or any weekend before then?
Rob :)
-
28 th or 21 st ok for me
-
28th or 29th is good for me
-
Good stuff. Table for 3 so far. 28th sounds favourite. I getting hungry already! If we can get a table for 4 or more we might qualify for free popadoms. I'n not sure.
Rob :)
-
Roll up, roll up, for the forum Birmingham outing! 28th December. Join in with the league of extraordinary curry chefs. We're now going to the Adil! Where the Balti began. The real deal. This is not to be missed. Don't forget Stephen is getting the drinks in.
Rob :)
-
I cant wait ;D
-
Have a great time guys!
-
Oops! My apologies. One to many Cobras. I think it's actually Phil who is getting the drinks in, or was it Michael? Don't matter, it's going to be a great night.
Rob :)
-
Phil very much regrets that in the present state of the domestic economy, a trip to the Midlands is simply not within his reach, but he wishes all participants a super time and looks forward to their trip report with eager anticipation.

Thanks Phil. I'll pinch your Cr0 badge idea if it's OK, so we can all recognize one another? I have hatched a cunning plan to see if we can get behind the scenes; we'll see. Actually we might not, but that's the idea anyway.

With great pleasure. When I'm next in Vietnam (early January 2014) I will see what it would cost to have some CR0 T-shirts made. I know we could get then printed in this country, but for less than a British company would charge to print them, it might be possible to get them machine-embroidered in Vietnam ...

I think machine embroidery is a must Phil. Oozes quality.

You know what would be a good idea at these meet-ups?
If everyone brought a teaspoon and a sample of their best homemade curry. 8)

We did indeed agree at the London meeting that each of us should have brought a sample of his BIR cuisine, but the idea was that we would have taken it home to try, thereby obviating the need for a spoon ...

Now you've just destroyed all my illusions, Michael : after seeing you in that raincoat, I envisaged you as being of an entirely different persuasion :)

I didn't want to shock you on a first date Phil
And besides I did not want to out shine George :)

Thanks to michael.t and jerrym for attending the Birmingham meet-up last night. Fantastic to meet you guys! Hope you both got home safely. The roads seemed icy when I got up this morning.
More blurb on the day/evening from me later, but the main event was the Adil, accepted by many as the pioneers of the Birmingham balti, and the chefs did not disappoint. The real-deal balti. Magical, mysterious, delicate, dancing spices.
Our order consisted of:
Popadoms to accompany the mint and chilli dips
Mixed grill starter, to share. A combination of sheek kebab, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, mini lamb chops, and chicken wings. Served with fried onions. Sizzler.
Balti garlic chilli chicken (Chef's special)
Balti chicken and mushroom
Balti meat
Tandoori table naan
We didn't take any pictures. Too busy eating and chatting. However, I will be popping over to the Adil again today (I left my hat there). :D A TA is in order me thinks; Balti meat.
Rob :)

the balti night can't really be wrapped up in words. real bond of friendship. Bob and Michael being star men for me.
the adil did not disappoint. my attempted recipe based on memory is good but a long way off the real thing. the table naan was exactly that.
we toasted absent friend curryhell.
the manager at Bob's local TA is star man too - was calm and friendly even though they were putting through an 80? order. the manager on the counter, 3 cooking and 2 delivering is some set up.
the most important thing was that we all had real good chat about the thing we mutually love - curry.
Michael was too nice in settling the bill for us.
many thanks to Bob for taking the effort to arrange a brill memorable night out.

Sorry for not making it to this, I was in two minds but in the end it was just a bit too far. Glad it went well for you.
-
So glad you had a great time guys ;D. I was disappointed with having to miss the London bash due to personal circumstances. I would really have liked to have attended the Brum gathering too. Sampling a "real" balti which would at least have provided me with a yardstick. It would have been good to meet up with all of you and talk all things curry as well as eating the stuff :P
Thanks Jerry, I raised a glass to you all yesterday eve and then proceeded to raise several more afterwards :-\ I had to make do with crumpets for supper with lashings of butter. No substitute for a good ruby I know, but i was saving myself for the trip to my local BIR tonight which of course will feature their North Indian Special :P :P
Hopefully, you'll have a repeat performance early in 2014 which i can attend :D
-
Sounds like you all had a real good time. ;D
Kudos to all involved, shame there's no photos
and Rob, try your best to get in their kitchen and find out
the Balti Myth/Mystery.
cheers chewy

Thank you Bob and Jerry for the great company
You really do see people in a different light meeting the forum characters in the flesh and is well worth the effort
I got to Birmingham a few hours earlier than Jerry so Bob took me out for a Traditional Bangladeshi buffet caf
-
Loved that buffet! Full on trad Bengali, courtesy of the Mishti Desh on Coventry Road. Held back as next stop was the balti triangle. After a few starters we sampled meat bhuna, chicken bhuna and chicken jalfrezi, all on-the-bone, with basmati rice. The mixed olive salad was also very tasty. Echo the meet-ups are a great experience. I'm thinking perhaps early Spring next year for another one in Birmingham, or sooner. Manchester would also be great.
Rob :)

Sounds like you had a great time guys.
My brother lives in Solihull - maybe can combine a visit to him with meet up. Would have to bring Mrs G too though :)
-
Michael - you're a star - attending both events. How did the main meal you had in Birmingham compare - taste quality wise - with what we had in London?
-
Hi George for me driving for a couple of hours is not a big effort :)
To compare the 2 would be hard as I would say they were completely different :-\
Jerry asked the waiter if he could bring us some GM from the kitchen to analyse which he kindly did
Now after tasting the balti and smelling the GM I would say the GM is a crucial part
After Meeting Jerry I can picture him at home right now breaking that GM right down to the final grain and spice for us all to share ;)
-
Michael - your finding on the garam masala is of interest. What a good idea of Jerry's to ask for a sample.
But I thought he was one of quite a few people who'd virtually written-off garam masala. Take his comment here, for example, in 2009:
Hi Eamon, welcome to cr0 8)
to my mind, you can easily live without garam masala when making BIR curries.
Eamon,
if it's BIR taste u are after then garam is really not what u want at all. i've tried to use it on many occasions over a long period of time using my home made and recently branded. the taste takes the dish away as opposed towards BIR taste for me. i do use it in the ashoka korahi bhuna but i've also swapped the garam for Kushi spice mix and it works just as well.
curry powder is what u need. u may struggle to make a good spice mix (mix powder) without coriander seed and cumin though.
-
George,
tgad2007 put me right on GM. i've followed those teachings for some time now ie roasting in the oven. i only used what i call chef garam in the base though being sure it has an impact on the oil. i still don't use GM in what i call BIR mains though ie just mix powder. the mix powder may have a small amount in but it's so small it's not out of balance and the key BIR tastes still come through.
Garam as michael has picked up on is key to Balti taste (abundantly clear from the sample). i'm currently using 50:50 mix:CGM in balti.
ps Michael - yes i could not resist - i made a portion on the sunday. i've even followed h4ppy-chris in buying a set of jewelry scales (ebay) to continue with more accuracy. very best wishes sir. we did have real good time.

I live in deepest darkest Wiltshire, any there any curry opportunities nearby?
