Title: Sticky rice
Post by: welshman on February 24, 2014, 07:46 PM
I cooked basmati rice yesterday.   Basmati rice is high in starch and the starch needs   to be washed out or the rice becomes sticky.  I soaked the rice for several hours, changed the water and rinsed the rice under a tap.   Despite this my rice was still sticky.  How long should basmati rice be soaked to remove the starch and besides soaking and rinsing the rice are there other methods to remove starch?

It was probably overcooked. What method did you use?

I had that problem quite a lot, I use Akash basmati and don't even wash it as its great quality rice and never have that problem now

Hey mate, you should be washing the rice until the water runs fairly clear and soaking for 20-30 mins.

The longer you soak it the more it breaks down and releases starch.

Also frying off the rice (like in pilau etc) before adding water and cooking will help seal the grains and kep starch at bay.

Hope this helps
