Title: Hot and Dangerous with Omid Djalili
Post by: Madrasandy on September 21, 2014, 08:11 AM
Just been reading about a new program that starts on Oct 24th on Quest, Hot and Dangerous with comedian Omid Djalili. Basically he is going around the UK in search of the hottest curry, but the twist is he hates chillis and spicy food!

Quote
Presented by stand-up comedian Omid Djalili, HOT & DANGEROUS is a brand new extreme food series which looks at the culture and chemistry behind some of the hottest, most dangerous foods in Britain.

The UK is a nation that loves fiery dishes. With over 9,000 Indian restaurants it's estimated we individually splash out over

Is dyslexia a condition you find amusing? Rather ironic since you were unable to read the original post which answered your question before you even asked it. :)

I've been diagnosed with mild dyslexia, so no I don't find it amusing. Sometimes I suffer with word blindness, It was only when you quoted MA that I saw it.

Please accept my apologies london. I misunderstood your meaning there, and saw offence when there was none.

No Problem DO, like most conditions there are varying degrees and my dyslexia is quite mild compered to some, Spell check helps a lot but not with my reading.

Good points being discussed here, I also have dyslexia quite badly, although I have learnt to live with it! I also am guilty of jumping straight at people when they have no understanding of the condition.
 ;)

LC,

It seems I'm not alone, most people seem to think if you're dyslexic that you can't read a single word,  I don't want to seem that I was jumping straight at DO as I wasn't. remember dyslexia rules KO :).

London.

The Dilshad where the crocodile curry is from is one of my locals and my mate has tried the curry he managed about half but he said it was more down to the fact it tasted horrible rather than the heat although he said he was up all night sweating but was freezing cold  ;D

Enjoyed that last night. I like Omid, reminds me of an Iranian Brian Blessed.  ;D
Couple of interesting things in the programme.
That shop in Woodford looks a great place for fresh chillies.
And also,  when in the Balti house, comparing the two identical curries made by the chef. One cooked in an Ali pan (no idea why they kept referring to it as cast iron? ) and one cooked in a steel balti.
They both agreed the balti tasted better.  ;)

Just watched this , good program, cant really believe the challenge at the end though.
On Baltis, they both agreed that the curry cooked in the balti pan was far better than the one cooked in the ali pan, had more individual flavours coming through.
Not sure how the SHU units work for a curry though with the hottest one only coming out at a measly 192,000 that's like a medium heat scotch bonnet  :(, still would like to try the Widower

Should have sent him around to mine for a Friday Night Curry Club curry  ;)

Is it possible, or even likely, that eating things that make you vomit is not such a good idea?  Call me a softy if you will, but I simply don't understand it.

You guys remind me of the Phys Ed faculty back in my uni days.  They would annually hold their Iron Man (and Woman) challenge which involved a marathon of physical exertion with periodic stops to eat ridiculous things like canned dog food, vegemite from the jar, dry weetbix, curdled milk, raw eggs, warm beer, etc etc.  If they reached the end of the course and still hadn't evacuated their intestines they were then fed a healthy dose of ipecac syrup.  The rest of the college population used to just stand back and watch these models of the human form torture themselves to the point of convulsion and laugh.  Funny thing is that one guy just couldn't vomit even after the ipecac.  Clearly the winner that year.  Then there was the funny guy who insisted on removing his clothing at every single event, even the lunchtime concerts in the Cafeteria courtyard.

Ever thought of eating naga's naked?

I think, Livo. that it is perceived by many British males that eating the hottest curries/chillies is some kind of a sign of masculinity/strength.

Those of us who enjoy a hot curry, but can also appreciate the subtle flavours of a milder dish can laugh in the reddened faces, and at the even more reddened anal passages of those who subject themselves to extreme heat.

I have still to receive a response from Andy regarding the scientific evidence that if the taste receptors in one's mouth are telling one's brain that the heat of chilli is so hot as to cause extreme pain (Andy refers to it as a 'high' - obviously hasn't taken real drugs) that the other spices in the curry can be detected and reasonably identified.

I like Andy, but he does talk shite sometimes :) Unlike me, as I tried to explain to Mrs G last night - everyone in the world talks shite, but not me :P

Note to self - remove tongue from cheek.

I agree that an incredibly hot curry isn't always a good thing. I do like them, but also appreciate a delicious, flavoursome korma, although I do find my self embarrassed to order one as part of living up to that stereotype. Had to laugh when I ordered a korma online and put "a bit hotter than normal please" in the comments box. Chef phoned me up to say he'd do if it he had to, but begged me to stick with it the way it was meant to be!

I find it rather odd that ordering a korma is cause for concern, similar to ordering a shandy or half nip when others order a pint of heavy.  At a mixed grill nobody thinks less of a person for eating chicken instead of steak.

I enjoy the presence of chilli in a dish but that's enough for me.

When we have a get together I generally make a korma or tikka masala for the girls, they prefer milder curries  :)

This programme could have been very good, but the way it was made let it down, and Omid groaning every time he ate anything was highly annoying
