Joining the Home Tandor club, Whoopdeedoo ;D
Restoration Project for summer fun.
Was offered this whopper oven the other day.
Thought about it for a minute and then said thanks. ;)
Just organised a gang for removal for Monday.
An original Dowd Tandor, Guessing its about 20years vintage, so it should be well seasoned.
Very low tech and not very shiny, a perfect boys toy.

Wow, that looks fantastic. I wonder how long a Tandoor like that would take to come up to cooking temperature? it looks like its gas fed with something like the BBQ lava rocks in the bottom from the pictures?
Anyway, very jealous of you and all the other forum members with a proper Tandoor. Its hard for myself to justify the expense of say

Lol... Love it.... Nice one Chewy. FYI I've had my tandoor in the garden, covered and pushed into a sheltered area to keep the worst of the elements off it and it has worked just fine. As you know I fired mine up last week and it's in good shape. The clay isn't cracked at all. Good luck to all Tandoori nutters!!! Lol....

Sorting out the old Tandor last night.
The case doesn't need any weather protection, as it's heavy guage galvanised steel
just need to protect the opening, with a weather proof lid. easy peasy!

Interesting differences between old and new and much smaller, as this will
only be used for Tikkas, Meats etc

Too early for me... I was looking a the new one. Just checked out your "big bertha" ... Bit of elbow grease & a few quid and I'm sure she'll be good!

Tandoor restoration project moving along fine.
Hard graft removing years of baked on grease on the outside case.
Eventually, primed and two coats of Hammerite smooth type metal paint
and pleased with the finish, might flash it over with some Indian graphics later on.

Filled some historic cracks in the pot and built up the base with fire cement,
Learnt alot about relining the whole pot, off a few experts I know. ;D ;D
Again I might tackle that at a later date, very interesting banter about coating
the new clay with various organic materials.
Anyhoo, left it to dry for a few days, then set a small charcoal fire to cure the refurb.
Worked fine and the pot is good.

and about 10 briquettes, filled the baffle plate and piled it high and set it away.
Let it burn and build the heat for 40mins with the lid half on.

Decided to test it by cooking a couple of Naans not long after.
Had made enough dough for 4 big Naans and they turned out great first time.

The charcoal smoke did make a marked positive difference to the taste, so I may
probably stay with old school charcoal, as the clean up was very easy.

Sounds a good idea, bringing your metal version round, for a cook off.
Have to check the weather report as rainy days are a no no at the moment.
Tandoori Hut plans drawn up, but I've got to finish restoring the bay window first ::)

Your Tandoor looks great now. Look forward to seeing those table naans.
I could do with a hand held thermometer gun as I find the charcoal can soon run out of steam and the temp soon drops off. I have to light mine at least 1 hour before use - depending on what I am cooking.
The restaurant charcoal in the large sacks is really good. It burns for longer and maintains the temp better. Problem is the couriers must throw it around a fair bit so the bottom of the bag is reduced to dust. It works out the same price pro rata as the stuff from the garden centres. This on the other hand looks really good. More money but potentially much better

I made some great naans at the weekend but it was quite windy and the wind managed to give the naans a nice gritty texture. Something to do with oiling the naans before cooking and the ash from the charcoal lol

Hi Mr.Punter
This is a old Gas Tandoor Oven and it came with a big burner, pipe assembly (on/off) and the
heavy gauge vented ( full of holes) baffle plate.
I stripped all this out and kept it aside, while I refurbed the pot.
I used the baffle plate to hold all the charcoal to emulate it sitting high on top of the original burner
To raise it off the bottom of the pot and get an air flow underneath the baffle,
I used three terracotta plant pot feet (simple) ;)
It acts like a medieval brazier, 100% oxygen to the coals/fire.
I might get a couple of fire bricks to get the baffle a few inches higher up in the pot to mimic the
position of the original gas burner.
At the end of the session, your left with 100% fine white ash.
Cleaning up, I simply lift out the baffle plate, tip the ash into a waste bag and replace the baffle plate. All very efficient ;D ;D

Understood. For what it's worth and as you know, most charcoal tandoor users have trouble keeping the heat when burning the coals on the bottom of the tandoor which restricts air flow etc... so I'm very interested to hear your results as I've not tried the charcoal & plate method resulting in extra airflow?

It only makes sense if you were crazy enough to buy/lease cylinders of pure oxygen, complete with flashback arrestors and other essential elements.

Here we go CT. May need a little touching up here and there, also the blue pipe sticking out is for the pipe from the tandoori oven to go through and then i will build a little waterproof box to store in when not in use.

Running Costs - 4 quid of lumpwood per afternoon session.
What I found amazing, was the length of time the clay pot retained its heat
It takes more than 24 hrs to cool down.
Anyhoo, just fired it up for todays session. Happy Days. ;D ;D

Well I had a epic bir day yesterday and as for 'boys and their toys', too right. A million times better fun than than standing with an inverted tawa over a gas ring or in front of a grill. As the coals were hot for ages we were looking for other stuff to put on.

Even tried an aubergine.
Most impressive was Chewy hand slapping the naans on bare handed with no naan cushioin.
Of course we finished of the day with a curry, it would be rude not to. :) :)

Superb looking grub, Chewy....that's one special piece of kit you've built for yourself. The chicken pieces were impressive enough, but then the whole chicken.........!!!! Looks succulent - crisp and juicy. I'm sure we'd all love to get our teeth into it!

I'll pass on the practical if I may CT but i'd sure like to try the end results :P A bit chilly outside at the mo to play around. I'll confine myself to the kitchen and knock up some Viceroy chicken for later ;D
