Title: The Glasgow Indian Takeaway Recipe Book by Alex Wilkie
Post by: Panpot on September 13, 2015, 05:24 PM
Hi been a good few years since I was on the site. Delighted to see it still going strong. I put a good 30 years into searching for the Glasgow Curry taste and between this wonderful place and my visit to the Ashoka and the recipes I gathered there (posted on here)I found it. The secrets I Found were the bunjarra and the fried garlic ginger paste with turmeric. These added the moorish thing that was missing in all other attempts. So I had no need to return and just got on with it. Now out of curiosity I came on today and found the Glasgow base which I have made and it tastes rather nice so hopefull of it blending in well. I have attempted to find the eBook by Alex Wilkie to add to my collection but can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help? I will be most grateful. Keep up the great work one and all, thanks

Nice to see you're back here, Panpot! :)

I, for one, still rate your Ashoka recipes and your Jaipuri, along with the G/G paste and bunjarra, are still very much regulars in this house.

Can't help you with the ebook, sadly. Alex seems to go by a variety of aliases and he's put a lot of his recipes up on this forum and on YouTube. There may be a link to his ebook on YouTube.

Received my copy of the book this morning. Only had a quick glance, but looks very interesting with a lot of techniques that make sense. Got high hopes - can't wait to try some this weekend :)

The book is fantastic, it produces a very good Glasgow curry, the base is basic and very easy to make, just follow the recipes to the letter and you cannot go wrong

Looking forward to it. Although I grew up as a kid/teen in Glasgow/Edinburgh, my parents were never into "spicey food" (and still stubbornly refuse to even try an korma as they "know" they won't like it!) so I've never tasted the Glasgow version. Will be intrigued to see how it varies from round here (Leeds/Bradford) and my fairly generic "national" style ones that I currently make which are probably based on bits of recipe from all over :)

Hi DhoklaFan,
I can help you here, Martin informed me the book was donated to the Administrator of another, more recent curry forum. I had to donate 5.00 Australia dollars to a chap called Leslie Jones.

I am currently working my way through this book and I must say the curries have turned out wonderful. It seems less is more with this method.

Let me know if I can help.

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you know, I had long since stopped selling the ebook with Alex (who is now big into Chinese food and has a successful You Tube channel).  Alex and I were once thought to be one and the same but I can assure you we live in different parts of the UK, although I have met him once in Glasgow when I travelled up from Shropshire.  It was me that wrote the book, with Alex's input.  We will hopefully be putting out something similar for Chinese food, but that's another story.
I had indeed donated the ebook to Les, to sell as proceeds were going to charity, however he wasn't getting much from it so didn't hang on to it.  At that point I thought the whole thing was done, but I still get the very occasional request.

Now, in 2020, I still make the curries and enjoy them greatly.  I also loved Panpot's recipes and yearn for more!  I now use a 45kw gas burner and having high heat output has changed my results for the better (I got it mostly for Chinese cooking but clearly it works well for Indian curries too).

Nice to see the forum is still going, good luck to everyone using the ebook! :)

Martin

Not I.  I believe that at least one forum member has a copy, but whether he or she might be willing to share it I have no idea.

I've got it but there appears to be no way to attach documents to messages. First time I've had the need so never noticed before. I wonder if that facility can be added if it isn't just the case that I'm not looking in the right place?

Just testing ...  Note that I had to re-save as ".doc" rather than as the default ".docx".  Plain text, PDFs, and various image formats are also allowed [txt, doc, pdf, jpg, gif, mpg, png, jpeg]

There's always uploading to google drive and sharing the link with whoever, that way there's no conversion necessary.

I meant attaching within a private message rather than in the open forum.

I've uploaded a copy of the book to your Dropbox Pakora King, hope you enjoy it - I'd say that as a fellow Scot the books base doesn't quite hit the spot for me (resulting curry too sweet) but the sides recipes are great, but give it a go and see what you reckon, you may be pleasantly surprised

Would you mind sending me a copy? Another exiled Scot here missing the real thing!

I think this has been discussed before.  A printed book is unavailable.  It was only ever an ebook.  Correct this if its wrong but I seem to recall that the author is apparently disinterested.  I have a copy for which I would happily pay should those with copyright privilege choose to invoice me as a soft copy or I would upgrade to a hard copy if possible and reasonably priced.

The other alternative would be to simply delete it.  I haven't actually cooked anything from it so I don't know if I'd choose to keep it.

The post in this thread by the author appears to grant permission to use the ebook and he wishes people luck in cooking from it. Martinwhynot claims to be the author with contributions from Alex Wilkie.

Fair enough mate.
