Thought Id start a new post for anybody growing chillies this year.
I know a couple already do and a couple intend to start.
I have many many seeds from the cayenne through to naga to carolina reaper and hotter, but not sure if Im going to be able to grow yet this season.
Be great to see what others grow and even offer advice to anybody needing it.
Fingers crossed this summer will be better for growing than last.
-
I shall be growing these next year from seed
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/vegetable-seeds/pepper-sweet-and-chilli-seeds/chilli-pepper-super-chilli-hot/905TM
- previously bought set of 5x different plants - this 'Super Chilli' was amongst them.
Disappointed with the heat & crop amount from my 5x Apache chilli plants this year - no where near as good as the 'Super Chilli'.

I know a lot of growers up and down the country who had disappointing return on their plants last year, hopefully this year will be better.
They shouldnt be too much of a problem to grow ghoulie, and should have decent yield. Are you growing in greenhouse?
-
For Christmas I got the following seeds:-
Dorset Naga
Hungarian hot wax
Thunder mountain chinese
Cherry bomb
7 pot white
Trinidad smooth
-
Nice varied selection fried, the 7 pot white ( called 7 pot as 1 chilli is upposed to heat 7 pots of food) should be the hottest with the dorset naga, think most others are medium heat.
When you sowing?
-
My grow list hopefully will be any of these 7 pot brainstrain, infinity x naga, 7 pot jonah, yellow moruga, choc madballz, brazilian ghost, bbg 7, red bhutlah, trinidan scorpion, bhut orange and a few different nagas including a landrace naga that is brutal , the majority will be naga though
-
I'll be sowing my seeds (some courtesy of MA - thank you!) In early Feb. I can only hope for some decent sun this year. The Atlantic storms currently hammering us don't offer much hope though.
-
I'll also be sowing in February. If this year is as hot as last year in Paris I might even get some chillis. Half will be going to the brother-in-law who has a mate with a greenhouse (and green fingers). Mine will start the year in my missus' office window and return home in late spring.
I hope someone gets at least 1 decent plant from each set of seeds. I also have 2 scotch bonnet plants which gave me one whole chilli between them, not bad considering I was going to chuck 'em the year before. They are nice and bushy now, be nice to get something from them.
-
Climate is a major issue when growing any of the super hots in the UK, and last summer had some very cold overnight temps.
Some plants never produced any chillies, and others took forever to ripen.
Still a very rewarding (and obsessive) hobby to get into, from the first seedling to appear to the first flower to the first pod and then a ripe chilli.
Fingers crossed I will be able to grow this year
-
Hi all,
I've tried overwintering a thai chilli plant for the first time (grown from seed last year). It's been inside since November and is now showing green shoots so fingers crossed for an early bumber crop!
-
I have 4 plants overwintering , all still very dorment but alive. Dont really want them getting new growth yet as its too early and they need the sun to produce pods
-
I am completely new to growing. I bought a plant that had chillis growing. I have used them. How long before more come along?
-
Excited :) seeds sown, no where near as many as I want, but a small managable amount (hopefully), I shall only be growing 1 of each variety
Naga Morich (true landrace isolated seeds)
Naga Morich (op)
Jigsaw x TSMB
Yellow Moruga
Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon
Infinity x naga
Bhut Orange Copenhagen
BBG x SRTSL
Red Ghost Scorpion
Big Red Mama Naga
-
Good luck with your sowing, MA.
Not nearly enough light here to sow seeds yet, plus we were at -5C this morning with -15C threatened for the weekend. I'll be starting mine off mid-February and hoping for an extended growing season. Some hope! :)
-
Last year was a poor summer but very mild November and December, prolonging the season.
I start mine indoors under lights, nothing fancy, just simple t5 tubes 24w 6500K. Very cheap set up.
3 have popped up this afternoon :)
-
Sounds promising for a good crop! Best of luck to all chili-growers on the forum.

First up , less than 4 days , happy with that

My 5 Apache plants are still going & look pretty good. Gave one away to an old dear who expressed interest. Just put 10x Super Chilli seeds in - fingers crossed they all come out ok

A cross of 2 extreme heat chillies, should be around 1.5 million SHU

Success - 1st 4 'sprouts' coming up at 7 days from sowing.
-
5 sprouting now
-
I find it exciting waiting for your seeds to show, also quite addictive sowing seeds
-
now 6
-
now 7.
Seen an interesting youtube video where the guy puts his seeds between moist kitchen roll folded over placed in a poly bag then into warm area like an airing cupboard. Checks show visually when the seed is sprouting - then pots into growing compost etc. Takes about 2 weeks he reckoned this way - but takes the guesswork out of 'will they sprout / when or not?'
-
I've just splashed out for a electric seed propagator. I didn't have any choice, as I told the missus.
-
I sow mine into a take away container with a few holes in the lid, about an inch of soil then a fine layer soil on top of seeds. Put the takeaway container into heated prop.
Once the seeds pop they need light otherwise they become too leggy. Once they get the first set of true leaves I transfer to 7cm pots.

Looking good MA..fingers crossed, prayer mat out
-
This will be my 4th attempt at growing chilli's and my last if i fail again, they always seem to be going well but then shrivel up just before ripening,i cant work out were i seem to be going wrong,i follow the instructions and advise i get from experienced growers to the letter.
-
Picking a couple of unripe chillies can stress the plant and cause it too ripen the other chillies quicker.
What chillies are you growing madpower? and where are you growing them?
-
hi madrasandy,i start them off inside and then once the plants have a few leaves i move them to the greenhouse, which was towards the end of march last year, the plants always seem to look healthy but like i said the chilli's always shrivel up and die but the plant still look healthy, last year i tried jalapenos, puya and serrano, this year i am trying cascabel and jalapenos again,i have been known to pick a chilli of the plants before they are ready,i will not do that again, also my greenhouse does not have a heater,do you think i need one?
-
I wouldn't go down below 15?c for too long. How old are the chilli plants?
-
Are you feeding while fruiting?
Are they getting enough sun?
Make sure they havent got aphids or other nasties, and dont overwater.
To be honest it sounds like your plants are just dieing, maybe from been too cold.
I wouldnt have thought the chillies would shrivel up on a healthy plant.
-
Now 8 - a late sprouter - no sign of the other 2 germinating - 80% taking though isn't bad.
Have potted 7x on into clear plastic cups with poly bag fastened around tops to keep moisture in
-
Quite a bit of growth in a week, some will need potting up too soon

Looking good. I planted 42 pots yesterday in my brand-new propogator :D. I'll take some photos when something happens!
-
2 of the 7 good sprouters now showing secondary leaf growth - not bad when you consider no heated propagator in use - just in warm utility room by the window.
-
5 out of 7 now showing 2ndry leaf growth
-
A few starting to grow now

All 7 of my good germinators have 2ndry leaf growth now - but spindly white stems still. Late sprouter struggling - but will keep it going to see if it gets there eventually.
Putting them onto sunny windowsill in the day when it applies.
-
Spindly white stems now turning greener after daily exposure to sunny windowsill.
-
Late sprouter died off ans I've cocked up 2 more when transferring to a larger pot when pricking out from the look of 'em - plus the dreaded spider mite (must be in the soil?) attacking one.
-
sprayed the plants with bug spray to stop the spider mites and it looks like 3x have definitely been badly affected by the spray - bad move on my part.
Now down to 4 plants
-
bug spray done for 2x more.
Now down to 2x plants !! My fingers not as green as I thought. Maybe that's why they sell you 10x seeds
-
Bought 3x Basket of Fire chilli plants to make up for my losses of my own from seed Super Chillis. 1x of these seem to wither fairly quickly after receipt - replaced by co. foc with a not so clever looking plant which turned out to be their last when I mentioned it didn't look too good.
While I was waiting for this replacement plant to be delivered, my wife commented she thought the other 2 Basket of Fire chilli plants had been overwatered by me - water was coming from the pot base. Soon after, these 2 plants also appeared to wither and die off. The replacement when it arrived staggered on and seemed to get better with time.
I went away for a while and left all my plants outside - and boy did it rain while I was away for 5 days. Fearing the worst, I was amazed to see all the plants thriving and looking really good - albeit all of them thoroughly saturated.
This got me thinking about my 2 'overwatered?' withered died off plants - was it chemicals in the tap water I had been using that killed them off - chlorine? The saturated with rainwater plants have never looked better.
I will only be using rainwater from now on - or at a pinch, tap water that has been boiled to drive off chlorine.
Just my thoughts - everything else has been the same.
-
Update - of all my efforts with the Super Chilli seeds sown - 10x - 2x are still going OK and showing signs of flowering. The one surviving Basket of Fire from the 3x plants that was the replacement is likewise. It's been a long drag - but a good learning curve.
-
Getting excellent chillies off the 1x Basket of Fire & 2x Super Chillies. 3x Apaches fruiting well too (gave 1x Apache away).
-
Very cold nights now with us up norf - chilli plants moved into conservatory to be safe.
-
It's getting cold down south. Just cropped our scotch bonnets which have done extremely well this year. Used some fresh and strung the rest to hang up and dry
-
1x Super Chilli plant survived the winter - other 4x various showed slights signs of kicking off ok - then just died off. The Supr Chilli is full of small chillis and plenty of flowers.
