Please note that the method has now changed. Please see here for new details:
http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1475.msg36034#msg36034 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1475.msg36034#msg36034)
1.0 Background and Scope:
This procedure summarises how to the upload photos. The procedure is also suitable for uploading other attachment types (i.e. txt, doc, pdf and mpg formats).
When uploading photos, the following constraints currently apply (subject to change):
- File types = jpg, gif and png
- Maximum file size = 1.5MB (per photo)
- Maximum number of files = 4 (per post)
Before you can upload your photos, you need to resize and compress them. This ensures that:
- the photos fit neatly into the picture frame
- the photos load suitably quickly
- efficient and economical use is made of server space.
2.0 Resizing and Compressing Your Photos:
Use any suitable photo-editing software (e.g. PaintShop Pro, Paint-Brush, Photoshop, etc), to edit your photos, as follows:
- Resized Image Size: 700 pixels wide by 525 pixels deep (scroll bars will be generated for larger photos)
- Compressed File Size: ~ 100 to 300 kB (but <1.5MB maximum)
Save you photo, with a suitable file name, for later retrieval
3.0 Uploading Your Photos:
- Generate a post by either starting a "New Topic" or replying to an existing one
- Select (left-click) "Additional Options" below the text window
- Select (left-click) "Browse" next to the "Attach" field
- Navigate to your photo and select it (double left-click or "Open")
- Select (left-click) "More Attachments" if you wish to post additional photos
- When you have selected the photos you wish to post, select (left -lick) "Preview" (to preview your photos) or "Post" (to post you photos) at the bottom of the page
- You can test your photos in the "Test Your Upload Pictures Section" here http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=659.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=659.0)
.
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know (message me) if you wish to suggest improvements in content or clarity.

How do you insert pictures in the body of the text of a post? I can follow the procedure above as far as inserting a picture, but when I click on the preview button the post doesn't show the inserted picture, just the text. What I'd like to do is show pictures in the body of the text describing the various stages in making my base and curry.
TIA
-
Hi Paul-B,
I think it places all the photos after the text? Unless someone else knows differently?
Regards,

Hi Folks ;)
You could also register for a free account at photobucket and use the image tags to post a link to your photo.....it saves the forum's bandwidth and storage space (if there's any limits).
here's the link to photobucket....

UPDATE (November 2009)
Please note that the method of posting images on the forum has changed.
Rather than posting them directly, please upload them to the cr0 image hosting server here:
http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/ (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/)
The process is pretty self explanatory.
Maximum image size is 1MB, but significantly smaller sizes will usually suffice.
You should resize your image to around 600 - 700 pixels wide by 450 - 525 pixels high (preserving the aspect ratio of your image).
Free photo-editing software can be found here: http://download.cnet.com/PhotoScape/3000-2192_4-10703122.html?tag=mncol (http://download.cnet.com/PhotoScape/3000-2192_4-10703122.html?tag=mncol)
Copy and paste one of the supplied links into your post on this forum and your image (or a link to it if you use "Direct Link") will appear directly in your post. If you copy and paste the "Embed on Bulletin Boards" link, your images will appear directly in your post.
Please refrain form using other methods to post your images.
This method has been established to ensure that the forum does not lose any photos in the future (which may happen if you use your own image hosting server).
It has also been established to overcome capacity issues on the forum, that have occurred from time to time, when posting images directly on the forum.
I hope this is sufficiently clear to enable members to post their images in this preferred manner.
Please don't hesitate to raise any queries you may have.

Snowdog,
Do this mean that you have worked it out?
Ray :)
-
My photo would not upload, still trying to figure it out.
-
Hi Snow,
Where are you upto? Let's see if we can help
Ray :)
-
Hi Ray,
Thank you for your help. I uploaded the photo then I copied and paste, wrote what I wanted but the photo did not come out. So not sure what happened.
-
Hi Snow,
so, I take it that you used the cr0 imaging site here? http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/ (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/)
If so, what you then need to do is, upload the photo. A series of boxes will appear with links in them, you need to click in the box entitled Direct Link. This should then turn blue. Right click, then press copy. Now, go to your original thread and click on the Icon that looks like a picture in a frame. IMG IMG should appear in your text. Now, inbetween both IMG's, right click and select paste.
This should do it. If you want to check that the upload has been successful, click on the preview button, and scroll up. You should see a preview of what you post will look like on the forum. If you are happy with that, then post your thread.
Hope that helps mate, if not, give us a nudge, and we'll work it out.
I'm currently attempting to do a pictorial guide for uploading images, but it's taking some time. Hopefully, I will have it complete by this evening. It should help, as it can be a bit confusing if you've never done it before.
All the best,
Ray
-
Hi Snow,
Sorry mate, I put you on a wild goose chase there. Re-read my post. I suggested that you should have clicked on "Embedded Link" it should actally be "Direct Link", sorry for any confusion.
Ray :)
-
No problem, thanks for your help, I will try again. :)
-
Hi Snowdog,
Take a look at this mate http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=5333.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=5333.0) It's not great, but it may make things a little clearer, fingers crossed.

Hi Cory Ander. I hadn't seen this post before I up loaded two pictures. I hope it doesn't cause problems. Apologies if it does. I noticed it's been a few years since you posted this new way of uploading photos, Has this site been updated for ease of use yet?
-
Don't think CA will mind, He has been gone 2 or 3 years now ;)
-
Has he. Where's he gone mate? Cheek of it! I've been stuck here... Lol. Thanks les. I'll have another go tomorrow..cheers

Is this still the preferred method? I've just been using the "Attachments and other options" function under the text entry box which affords no option to place images and simply tags them at the bottom of a post.
This outlined method from 2009 is a bit drawn out and disjointed. It is very clunky but it does work.
I used to use a different forum that had excellent control over placement of uploaded images inline in posts simply be checking a checkbox.
-
Hard to know what is recommended, to be honest. I normally upload from Picasa, then insert the relevant URL in an [ IMG ] ... [ /IMG ] element, but you can also use
http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/
and then just paste the proffered BB code. However, this won't automatically resize the image for you, so you may need to add (e.g.), " width=640" in the opening [ IMG ] tag. The following is an example of the latter technique, with width=320

Hmm. Code editing to place images in a forum post in 2018. :(
-
Yousef/Admin - can we get the site to actually upload and host images. I wanted to share an image, and I really can't be bothered to fanny around uploading it to a third party hosting site, before adding links, etc. etc.
There has to be a quicker and easier way and I'm sure it would encourage more users to post pictures.

Hello
You can upload your images as attachments

Will try and figure out AGAIN how to post on this site.
What exactly is the problem, UF ? To attach an image to this reply, I first click on Attachments and other options (https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?action=post;quote=136266;topic=14117.0;last_msg=136266#), then browse for the image I want to attach, and finally click on "Post". Up to four seven images can be attached to any one post. Alternatively, if the images are already online somewhere, all that is needed is to click on the "Insert Image" icon ((https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/Themes/vVide/images/bbc/img.gif)) and then insert the image URL between the opening and closing [IMG] tags, optionally specifying an attribute 'width=<whatever>' in the opening tag.
-
Photos may need to be resized. Up to 7 per post now Phil. Shame there isn't an easy post inline option.
I use Fotosizer. Take photos off my phone. Crop image if desired. Then use fotosizer to resize images to 90% maintaining aspect ratio. This is the process I needed to use on the previous forum system image requirements. It may not still be required under the current forum image requirements, but I've continued the process anyway.
-
Photos may need to be resized.
Not necessary for attachments, Livo
-
As mentioned in the recent thread, (and above in this one) an "inline" image control would be very helpful.
I used to use a forum that had a simple option within the attachments management to place images "inline" within a post. This meant that some posted entry text could be made, followed by inserting an "inline" image as an attachment, followed by some more text, then another image, etc, until the maximum number of attachments was reached. The images and text could be reordered and edited easily and it made for well presented posts incorporating pictures appropriately placed within a body of text.
If the "inline" option was not applied the images would just be dropped onto the bottom of the post as occurs by default here. Preview of a post does not include the photo attachments and there is no control over placement. I really couldn't be bothered mucking about with image hosting sites or entering code. I could do it but I'm not going to devote the time.
What do the "Do not use smileys" and "Return to this topic" options actually do?
-
What do the "Do not use smileys" and "Return to this topic" options actually do?
Where do you see those options, Livo ?
** Phil.
-
When you select "Attachments and other options" to manage attachments, 3 check boxes appear: Notify me of replies, Return to this topic and Do not use smileys.
-
Testing :) :-)
So, both of those options selected, "smiley" sequences pass through unmapped (rather than being mapped to emotikons), and after clicking "Post" the user is taken to https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=10.0
** Phil.
-
Thanks Phil. I have no real use for these options.
-
I have resized, made sure the right amount of bites are used, used the attachment feature and the CRo hosting site thing and the image when i click on preview has a broken link on the thread i have started, i have used the CRo site thing has long as i have been on this site and for some unknown reason it just will not post the image. This is the reason why i don't post has much on here because of the amount of time and faffing about just to post a picture.
-
Just got the images to be seen on the preview but when i go to post just says your post might have been deleted blah, blah, blah.
Forget it will try and describe the best i can when i make again.
-
Thanks Phil. I have no real use for these options.
There are uses for the first
-
Don't re-size. Don't worry about the number of bytes (unless your files are ginormous), forget all about the former CR0 image host, and just include an attachment. Example herewith, with statistics to be added retrospectively. 5760 x 2646, circa 10MB.
-
That has occurred, but not often. I see the usefulness of the option.
Any advice on inline images?
-
How do i do that, when ever i click on the attachments and other options i then click preview nothing, then when i click on the attachment window part it opens up another window for me to pick another file to attach.
-
Here we go this was my first attempt.
The preview button doesn't work for me, so i just posted instead.
-
Sorry, yes, I should have made that clear
-
And therein lies the necessity of images. Well done Uncle. Those are a couple of very nice looking curries.
Now if we can only work out how to place the images inline so that descriptive text may be added to each individual photo.
-
Any advice on inline images?
Not really, because I am the fortunate position of being able to web-host locally (either at home or from the hotel), so I am not dependent on commercial photograph web-hosting sites. Before Google killed it, I made considerable use of Picasaweb. Google Photos I regard as virtually unusable
-
A quick test suggests that https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/ might be of some use for image hosting, but if the uploaded image exceeds 1MB there is no error message and instead defective code is returned. For images smaller than 1MB, it does seem to work :
(https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/pics/721082635d704e002348b2c8ba973ede.JPG) (https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/imagehost/#721082635d704e002348b2c8ba973ede.JPG)
Note, however, that if someone follows the hyperlink from the embedded image, browser caching may result in their browser displaying the embedded image unscaled until the page has been re-loaded.
** Phil.
-
Thanks Phil but I don't need to be mucking about with resizing images down to under 1024 KB and uploading to image hosting to post pictures. I know it works as I've done it on the past, but I'm probably not going to do it again. My photos will just be dumped at the bottom of posts.
As I said, the other forum software just took a click of the mouse button in a checkbox to have images and attachments placed inline. Quick, easy, versatile and efficient. I don't know the Forum software that was used and the forum is long gone.
-
I understand your point of view, Livo, but if this thread is to be of maximum use to new members, I think that comments on how image handling could be improved (as opposed to how to work within the constraints of the present system) might be better made under "Suggestions for improving this site (https://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1641.0)".

Hello livo, you can use the [img] bbcode to place your images anywhere without resizing.

I still can not get my pictures to load on this site, tried the Image Host and the Attachments and other options at the bottom of a page. I have resized and still no joy.
Any help, Again.

Send me a PM with your 'phone number, UF, and suggest a convenient time, and I will talk you through it. Provided, that is, that you use a PC with Windows
