I'll be very interested in your assessment Phil.  I may need to buy a tin when I'm next in Wentworthville.

For those who think "Madras Curry Powder" is not used in India, and / or those who may wish to make your own Madras Curry Powder, here is a link to a video in Hindi (with English Sub-titles) by The Bombay Chef - Varun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24CfBr5t1Fs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24CfBr5t1Fs)

At 4.40 - 4.50 he refers to the "Market shelf very identifiable or popular Green Box, but now you can make it on your own at home".  There are others in the Green Box but I suspect he is referring to Ship.  When making this I suggest omitting the Fried Onion and Garlic for better storage shelf life but Varun says it can be frozen for up to 6-7 months with these included.

Some other Green Box Madras Curry Powder brands from India: Kwality, Mother's Recipe, Eastern, Kitchen Xpress.

Pardon my ignorance here, but is curry powder like this a possible substitute for what we refer to as mix powder?  I recently bought a tin of S&B Oriental Curry Powder which is great for Singapore noodles, fried rice etc but don?t have any Indian curry powder other than what I mix myself.
Curious.

Yes. It is possible to use this as a mixed curry powder. That's essentially what it is.  Many (possibly most) BIR chef's use a portion of a proprietary brand Madras Curry Powder (Rajah) as 1 ingredient in their own mixed powder along with more Turmeric, Coriander, Cumin etc to make up their own "Special Mixed Powder".  Some would make up their own completely from scratch.

I have and do occasionally use just shop bought Curry Powder.

Still stuck in America, Livo :(  The husband of the friend who kindly agreed to act as forwarding agent opened it in error, so now they have to liaise with the local authorities to find out how it must be re-sealed in order to clear UK border controls !  As he is in hospital and she has injured her back, this is all taking time ...

Arrived about three days ago.  Sadly the Kenyan Asian vegetarian book which formed part of the same consignment was "lost" in the post — the cardboard sleeve arrived, apparently slit open along its length.  Sigh.  incidentally I now have four tins of said Ship brand green label Madras curry powder, which I do not anticipate using in this lifetime, so if anyone would like one let me know and I will re-sell it at cost + p&p.
