Title: Where Do I Start!
Post by: Cory Ander on May 21, 2007, 04:37 AM
Hi All,

I thought it might be helpful to provide some directions for those who are new to cooking British Indian Restaurant ("BIR") curries and/or are new to this forum.  Here's what to do and where to look (just click on the links):

Using this Forum to Cook a British Indian Restaurant Curry

Step 1:  Arm yourself with the necessary basic ingredients - see here: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1766.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1766.0).  You may need additional ingredients for your selected curry base, main course dish and starters and side dishes

Step 2:  If you want to make your own curry powders ("spice mix") or garam masala, rather than buy those that are commercially prepared, look here: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=28.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=28.0)

Step 3:  You will need to make a curry base ("curry gravy" or "curry sauce") - see here: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=2.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=2.0)

Step 4:  ]Prepare your pre-cooked meat using one of the methods here:  http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=28.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=28.0)

Step 5:  Select main course recipe from here: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=3.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=3.0)

Step 6:  Select starter and side dish recipes from here: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/board,73.0.html (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/board,73.0.html)

Step 7:  Post pictures of your results here!: http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=10.0 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?board=10.0)

Hope this helps!   8)

Since CA is no longer around, maybe one of our senior members could update these links?

Seniority won't help -- the only people who can update them now are George & Stew (no-one else has privilege so to do).

I meant senior as in cooking ability/reputation as opposed to seniority in the ranking of the site.

Maybe yourself, CH, CT, SL, Rob, and others could get together and agree on a welcoming starter thread for complete newbies

Yes, I understood what you meant by seniority; the confusion is more about whether the links can be updated.  CA's links can't (other than by a moderator or the site admin), but a new set could be created.  It's probably a worthwhile task, but if it's not to have to be done all over again in a few more years, we really need a better mechanism that can be continually updated in the light of the current received wisdom.  I would suggest that we ask George if he can take this under his moderator's wing; he could set up a "Beginners start here" thread, and because he can continue to update the first message in the thread (because he is moderator), it need never get out of date.   To make life simpler, all that might be necessary in the first place is to clone CA's post, and then the rest of us can make suggestions for possible improvements; if there is good agreement on these, then we can ask George to incorporate them.  How does that sound ?

** Phil.

Perfect, just what this Trainee needs.  Next stop local farmer's market for some quality mutton or chicken.  Which sauce to start with?!  Thanks Cory.
