Title: Off topic thread
Post by: Jethro on August 29, 2007, 10:38 PM
Well seeing as this was my idea for an off topic thread, I suppose I better kick it off.
Get talking curry nuts, about anything you want from to the sensible to the bizzare.

Jethro. ;D

This is probably the place for discussing the use of the Quote feature. Does exactly what it says on the tin! :D

Fair enough, seeing as there's no Ronseal section :)

On an officially on-topic thread but not an officially off-topic thread...

Haven't you got anything better to do? Back in 2007, the then membership no doubt had better things to discuss than waste their time on infantile drivel like this, so there was no response to Jethro's opening post.

Some people may think it's harmless fun or banter. I suggest it risks bringing the forum into disrepute because when new members turn up and see threads like this, they could be forgiven for thinking this forum is a waste of space. I'm minded to delete this thread, unless anyone can suggest a good reason why not. That's anyone outside of the cliche who seem to be fueling this kind of mindless chat room rubbish, unwittingly or deliberately trying to spoil the forum.

First you defaced the forum with huge images, and now this.

I don't think you can really have it both ways, George.  Only two weeks ago you wrote :

Strange folks? We still achieve more than on forums where anything remotely off-topic is deleted.
and now you are proposing not just to delete a single off-topic post but rather an entire thread.  On balance, I think your earlier perspective is the better -- we are what we are because we do tolerate a certain amount of off-topic posting, and those fora that rigourously stamp down on such things are the poorer (and less welcoming/friendly) as a result.

As one of those who goes off-topic more than most, I am in the future going to try to add all off-topic contributions to this thread (if you don't delete it) and add an explicit redirect from the main thread so as to try to leave the latter uncluttered.

** Phil.

I'm not surprised going off your previous post. Stand in the corner and repeat 100 times, ' I must not have an opinion'

Anyway, I'm sure everyone will agree that you're always welcome here and you can say what you want without getting the strap (unless you swear).  :)

Who was the 1st to use cabbage on this wonderful site ;D

He Who Must Not Be Named (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/topic,2332.msg20785.html#msg20785) mooted it as an idea in 2008, and shortly afterwards Haldi (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/topic,200.msg25936.html#msg25936) stated that he had tried it, amongst many many other things.

2005 is the earliest reference that I can find on this forum from Pete.
Title: Arguments
Post by: Peripatetic Phil on October 01, 2014, 03:43 PM
my use of the word 'argument' was intended to mean 'a reason or set of reasons given in support of an idea, action or theory'

It is difficult, not to say impossible, to see how "what was the most productive, not the most used" can conceivably be interpreted as 'a reason or set of reasons given in support of an idea, action or theory', yet that is exactly what you claimed the argument to be be in your earlier post :

The argument was what was the most productive, not the most used.

Thus I continue to believe that your original use of "argument" was as implied in my earlier message, and not as you would now seek to claim.

Your 'argument' was that because everyone uses base and only some make naans, JBs base thread was more productive. That was  where  the word argument came in, and the definition of it is relevant.

Case over; go and 'argue' with someone else now :)

No, that was my contribution to an ongoing discussion; if you chose to view it as an argument, and to so classify it retrospectively, that was your choice, not mine.

But there is no-one more argumentative than you on this forum, Mr McGarp, so with whom better to argue if I want a worthy opponent than your good self ?  CA gave up and went off to found a s[h]ite where no argument is permitted; perhaps you could do likewise and found a s[h]ite where /only/ argument is permitted :)  Like he, you would soon become the sole member, but you could still have good arguments with yourself ...
Title: Re: Arguments

Well I think that all arguments on the forum should be ran through the Shakespearean translator (http://lingojam.com/shakespearean) which would make them more interesting to read for those not involved and probably make the participants not get too annoyed at each other. Examples below.  :)

thus i continue to believe that thy original lay-to of "argument" was as impli'd in mine earlier message, and not as thou would anon seek to claim.

thy 'argument' was that because everyone uses base and only some make naans, jbs base thread was moo productive. that was  whence  the word argument came in, and the definition of 'tis relevant. case over; go and 'argue' with someone else anon :)

Verily, thou hast a point, anent. but that resource to which thou dost alude doth of itself enwheel a trifle that, whilst seemingly in true accord with its assert'd aim, doth yet misseth the mark by enwheeling that which ne'er was writ by the fair Bard's own quill.  To whit : "fie!?", f'r while Mr Shakespeare hath undoubtedly pen'd "fie" on occasions more than mortal man can betoken, the punct'ion "!?" is unattest'd in all his Grete Works, and thus thy resource can sadly upon not be rely'd.

Forsooth, and who are thou, poltroon, that thou dos't seek to others tell how this fair thre'd shall henceforth be yclept ?  Were not I sworn all blud-spilling henceforth to eschew, thou and thy entrails soon would parted be, and those which hitherto thou hast to thyself held most dear, ee'n they upon my trusty blade would dangle e'er thine eyen were at last foree'er foreclosed ...
