Title: Spicy Nights (takeaway)
Post by: haldi on June 21, 2008, 08:44 AM
Ok, it's a takeway not a restaurant, but I was really impressed
It's in Nottingham on Haydn Road
I bought a veg vindaloo with rice
I got a free poppadom chucked in too!
This all came to ?5.65
It tasted really good, but the odd thing about the vindaloo, was that they sprinkled it with whole cummin seeds (can you see them?)
It gave a really nice touch to it
If you use cummin as a powder, it gets into everything, but like this, it gave lots of little bursts of flavour
Has anyone come across this being done elsewhere?
It's new to me
The rice was different too
It's bright yellow with a spiced flavour, but there are no whole spices in it
I'll be going there again
Yum!!

hi haldi
the rice looks similar to turmeric rice, my wife does her curries ( more authentic ) and puts turmeric in the rice and 'mikes' it with water. this has been fried as it looks glossy but yummuy( they may add a muslin full of fragrant whole spices) in the boiling process?
regards
gary

Hi Gary
       You are right
The colouring is definitely turmeric
I'll have to dig out a few homestyle recipes to see if I can match the recipe
They really took care about the cooking, at this place
The vegetables for the curry were still crisp
Nothing sloppy about them
I've read so many times on menus, how the owners of takeaways/restaurants use only the freshest ingredients, and prepare things daily
Normally that is an exageration, but I believe this places really does it

Haldi,

That looks exactly like the Bruce Edwards turmeric pilau. Its fantastic and the only rice I make.

Check it out. Note - be sure to use the "original" BE pilau recipe, not the updated. Its the one that fries the rice in oil without washing. I haven't tried the updated recipe, but after tasting this one I don't care.

I've got that recipe but never tried it
Thanks Josh, my next rice will be that!
