Title: Curryfest
Post by: tempest63 on March 05, 2022, 07:16 AM
We had our first curryfest since the start of the pandemic last week, and my enthusiasm bubbled over to the point that the table was groaning under the weight, but a mixture of friends and neighbours got through most of it with a little left over to give my son 3 lunches.
Starters were
Lamb Cutlets Dishoom cookbook,
Pea filled potato cakes, Anjum Anands Indian Every Day,
Keralan Fried Chicken from Kricket
And an Indian inspired salad.
Mains were my all time favourite
Madhur Jaffreys  Rogan Josh, but cooked slowly with large chunks of mutton instead of lamb,
Pork Cheek Coorg, again from Kricket,
Anjum Anands Black Pepper Chicken and her Pickled Pink Prawns from Indian Every Day
Cafe Spice Namaste Lamb Dhansak
Roasted Aloo Gobi from Masala by Mallika Basu
Chickpea Pilau, off the internet
Vivek Singhs Stir fried greens.
Wife made a dessert of Panna Cotta with Balsamic berries (not very Indian) with Mango Sorbet (much more like it)
Poppadums, breads, chutneys and a few other accompaniments came with the started and main course.

Our next curryfest is 2nd April for extended family and tonight I am trialling an Atul Kochar Chicken Kofta and tomorrow a MeeraSodha pork cheek vindaloo.

Thank the heavens the Covid restrictions are lifted and we can return to the new normal.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to prepare all that? Was it over a few days? I find that if I have people round and do a few curries that I start them a couple of days in advance otherwise I'm a nervous wreck when the actual people arrive. Really impressive though.

The Rogan had been cooked a couple of weeks before and was languishing in the freezer. I took the Friday off of work then spent all Friday and Saturday prepping and cooking.
Our next curryfest is April 2nd and I have cooked another mutton Rogan Josh and Meera Sodahs pork cheek Vindaloo which are both in the freezer. Black pepper chicken has to be cooked fresh and I am looking at starters that can be prepared ahead then cooked in the oven.

Our next curryfest is 2nd April for extended family and tonight I am trialling an Atul Kochar Chicken Kofta.

I’m very glad I trialled these kofta as the final result we both found a little lacklustre and disappointing. The spicing was very light in both the kofta and the thin sauce and I wouldn’t have been happy serving them to guests.

I don't get it. Yes, the restrictions have been lifted but the infection rate is reported to be almost as high as it ever was. Plus, immunity from jabs may be wearing off. Good luck with socialising but it's not for me, until the infection rate goes down.

Well, I'm off to a quiz this evening.  Not an online one, a real one.  And I play table tennis and bowls, and have been doing so for as long as such activities have been permitted since the start of the pandemic.  Oh, and I attended a wine tasting earlier this week.  OK, I may catch Covid-19; but then again, I may not.  Either way I will be enjoying life and the company of good friends, rather than locking myself away for fear of catching a disease with which we will all have to learn to live for the remainder of our lives.

Why is that, Garp ?  Are you planning to attend and be as obnoxious at the quiz as you are on this forum ?

Lol! Love it Phil. I too am throwing away my masks and going back to living a normal life after hearing my husband has myeloma, we've had our jabs and refuse to spend the rest of our days hiding away from life, obviously when he has stem cell treatment and his immune system is at rock bottom we'll be more careful but until then believe life is for living!

Tempest! Wow! I have read and reread this many times... I wish I was there!

For the neutral readers here, can we lose the Off-Topic posts/sniping please (including this line. not something I like seeing everyday!)

Onions should be able to move all OT replies to the "off-topic replies" thread that I set up for that purpose.

started with
baked onion bhaji,
pea and potato cakes,
Dishoom’s spicy lamb chops
Kricket’s Keralan fried chicken

Mains consisted of

Pakistani beef kofta,
chicken in black pepper,
paneer jalfrezi,
spicy roasted fish,

Sides were

Daughter and Partner announced they are expecting their second child in November which lifted the evening as we lost my Mum on the 22nd March

Gobsmacked.  No other word can adequately capture my reaction to your ability to turn out so many different dishes at one time.  Well done, T63, but sorry to learn of your mum's death.

Thanks Phil for your kind words regarding mum.
As for turning out so many dishes most are precooked and just require heating through, or a 20 to 30 minute simmer to finish off. I use the cast iron Le Creuset Balti pans to finish them off and then serve in the same to retain heat. But I had to admit defeat this time and the stir fried veg never got cooked.
