Which reminds me : Waitrose Weekend have an article on foods with Protected Geographical Indication status, one of which they list as "Scotch Lamb". As someone who should know, would you write "Scotch lamb" or "Scottish lamb", Stephen ?

Phil I'm not sure but I would instinctively call it Scottish lamb.

Phil I'm not sure but I would instinctively call it Scottish lamb.
So would I. But "Scotch Broth, Eggs, Mist, ", never "Scottish Broth, ...", if I understand the usage correctly ? Interestingly, the Urban Dictionary recommends "Scotch Beef"; not so sure about that one ...
Oh, and of course, "Scotch tape", as I noticed when I went to stick a new label on my freshly-made Tandoori mix !

Also being a Scot, I would say Scottish Lamb is correct, as in Scottish Shortbread

Being an old Mod, is a hard habit to break.
A Mod ? A MOD ??? One of those parka-wearing, scooter-riding, multi-million mirror displaying creatures we used to do battle with in Brighton ? I can't believe it. What is the world coming to when an ex-Mod and an ex-Rocker can have an intelligent conversation about curries instead of trying to kick the sh1t out of each other ? If they learn about this in the Nightingale, I'll never be able to show my face in there again.

Good choice Axe.

El Cielo Axe.

Doing Razors lamb kebebs on the BBQ tonight, so naturally the music will have to be suitable too. I present for your BBQ'ing pleasure:
Lamb Of God
EDIT: Just read some of the YouTube comments, I advise that you don't - there is some highly retarded and offensive comments.
Lamb of God - The Passing/In Your Words (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l2_KpfCcmA#)

I'm loving this topic. (http://file:///C:/Users/Admin/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-7.png)(http://hengrid.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/metal-smiley.gif?w=53&h=52)
That track was certainly a game of 3 halves! :o The double kick was wicked.
-
I love heavy metal as much as the next guy, but I CANNOT stand screaming or growling vocals. Really gets on my tits. Currently listening to Killing Joke's new album.

http://www.youtube.com/v/VoKBmJ-0khg (http://www.youtube.com/v/VoKBmJ-0khg)
-
I'd have to agree with you reference the growling, never really understood it. I once saw a youtube clip someone posted of a song that was 22seconds long if you can call it that, which simply consisted of the singer giving one almighty 'wwwhhhooooaaaarrrrr' in a low tone whilst the band thrashed their instruments as hard as physically possible. I actually felt for the poor drummer, who struggled to keep up. The whole thing was completely beyond any rational thought and watched bewildered, yet strangely, the crowd appreciated it in bucket loads of applaud! Nowt queer as folk!
And now for something completely different:
OMD - Maid of Orleans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz8EzZg6UtI#)
-
Ah OMD. My wife's mate used to work with their drummer. Classic song that.
No schizophrenic French peasant girls but still good, I give you...
Bloc Party - Waiting For the 7.18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHWrX7X8v9Q#ws)

I see you and raise you this, granted I was never a fan overall, but, some songs are are meant to be.
The Police - Every Breath You Take (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOGaugKpzs#)

I should like the Police, yer Summers is a great guitarist. It's just that Sting is such an @rse... >:(

How about Yorkshire's finest?
Arctic Monkeys Do Me a Favour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GufiqA5mgO4#)
-
Hi Axe, Ramirez, VC & All
Great song posts, clearly a lot of diversity here, great to hear new things.
I too agree about the 'growling' style metal vocal, rarely pleasing. I mainly listen to Lamb of God to appreciate the technical skill of the drummer and guitarists, they are jaw droppingly good.
Axe, I suspect you may have been referring to Napalm Death - they are in a class of their own with the screaming growl vocal.
Anyway, here is a nice song which is great to cook along too.
Foo fighters - Let It Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vxbMh8QMQ8#ws)
-
Ah, yes. You cannot beat a bit of Foo Fighters.
-
I have been listening to quite abit of the Foo Fighters of late, I still can't make my mind up about them. Some tracks I love, some I hate.
Here's a classic Sabbath track covered by a Faith No More. I think they more than did it justice. Enjoy!

Hi Axe
Appetite For Destruction is one of the best rock albums every created. I remember spending weeks pouring over a TAB book of that album learing every note that Slash played :) - Years ago now.... tooks ages to nail the Sweet Child and Paradise City solos.
Anyway, here is some more Slash rock for your enjoyment, from his new-ish solo album.
Slash - By the Sword
Slash - By the Sword (ft. Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother) [HQ] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yajU0oeMJo4#)
-
Now i'm liking that very much indeed, hope you bringing it to the BBQ!!
Tab for GnR lol yes, I remember working out the Sweet Child o Mine intro played on the 17th as a bar chord. Everyone else hopped around the 12th playing dot to dot single notes and swore blind they were right. But Slash' hand never moves when you see him he play it. Foot on the monitor, axe around his knees, fag lit, lifeless gaze ;)

Almost everything from this show is fabulous. Particularly if you're a fan of Northern Soul as the show was only aired in 1966 and is full of great soul and blues. I have all 6 dvd's. ;)
Also If you love Freddy King, nothing comes close to the set he did on The Beat 1966.

Class act Axe,
I used to do security In the Astoria years ago and Bruce was promoting his solo album.
Unbeknown to the crowd was that Iron Maiden was secretly back stage for the finale.
I was put on back stage door which gave me the hump as I obviously wanted to be front house, I've never felt such a plank as when Ian Gillan turned up without a pass and I had to knock on Iron Maidens door to ask if it was alright if he could come in.
I did half get some verbal.
It didn't help that I was also instructed to tell them to"Drink up Now" at then closing party! :-\
Where have all the years gone?

I just assumed that was a bit of spin from Phil ::)
I assumed he was simply showing his general disinterest in all things musical, prefering to listen to someone cycling in the Tour de France which wouldn't be a lot different to listening to daisies grow. ::)

Are you a bit of a cyclist then?
Pantani was a cyclist; compared to him, I am not even worthy of the brake dust on his rims. But I do enjoy both (road) cycling and watching my betters do the same, and while I was searching for a recording of yesterday's Milano--San Remo race I came across "Italian legends in the Tour de France" (two-disc set) and decided to spend at least a part of this afternoon watching my all-time super-hero "il pirata" :)

No, I enjoy music from time to time (on the floor at the moment are an odd mixture of folk and early music CDs) but the question was "What are you listening to now", and I could hardly pretend I was listening to music when I was in fact listening to a DVD about Marco Pantini, could I ? I probably spend many many more hours either cycling or watching cycling than I do listening to music, but that doesn't imply that I have no interest whatsoever in the latter, just that it is very much a minor part of my life.

Nice one! I'm also a keen road cyclist, although I spend a lot more time riding (solo generally) than watching stuff.

I've been listening to some old King Crimson because a mate of mine in a rock band was looking for suggestions for some more covers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tgtnk3w5tA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tgtnk3w5tA)
I had forgotten how good these tracks are, prog rock at it's best.
Sadly the tracks are probably too hard to play for my mate's band. :(

totally agree with the Oz Pink Floyd...awesome tribute band.
I've seen them twice.
1st time (approx 1990) was in King Tuts Glasgow and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up when they started....they still do when i reminisce about that night :)
2nd time (approx 1991/2) was in the SECC. shit concert hall...shit sound...good band.
about that time there was an awesome aussie "The Doors" tribute band...
same shit as above...
I seen the Australian tribute band for The Doors in King Tuts....fcuking Ace....#
Seen the same band 2 months late in the SECC...total shiiiite..
Cheers

I like david byrne and talking heads alot one of my fav tracks
from talking heads has to be "and she was" great track and story.
But here we have another great group.
Roxy Music even changed the words to this Wilbert Harrison
song. Whats that all about ?
Sadly both singers from Canned Heat passed away at very young ages :-(
The track says alot really its simple but has a great live quality
at the same time, i hope you enjoy it....

Thanks for that Jack. ;) I like to hear regional accents coming through into the more poppy songs rather than only hearing them in straight folk.
Jools' show has a great mix of artists and usually very well chosen songs. There's been so many discoveries for me from genres i would never have stumbled upon if it wasn't for "Later with. ." 8)

No, I dont think so, but its a name that rings a bell with "the beat" (german show) :-\
Quite a few forgotten/obscure names appeared on those german 60's and 70's music shows, and even further back to the 30's. We have a lot to be thankful for to the germans when it comes to archived music footage. ;)

Bonnie looks amazing for her age (62 or thereabouts) but perhaps there's no substitute for the appeal of someone as young as the winner (19 years old), if you need a lot more than just a first class song.

Wow - didn't realise there wre prog rock fans on here....or people still playing it.
Take s me back to my youth, watching Pallas and Marillion in the Heathery Bar, Wishaw.

Yes indeed, prog is still very much going, with many great bands offering a wealth of odd time signatures, strange lyrics, and lengthy guitar/moog solos. Very passionate following. But generally not trendy enough for the mainstream audience and few prog bands can make a living just by playing these days. Marilion are one of the exceptions.
I also like the more melodic neo-prog sound best (there are loads of sub-genres) and know the Welsh band Magenta quite well. Rob's (keys and composer) day job is a director of music for Welsh TV, Chris (lead guitar) is a London Royal college of Music Licentiate trained classical guitar teacher, and Christina (The Princess of Prog) works for the NHS. Here's them playing live some years ago at the Point in Cardiff. Beautiful guitar solo by Chris, who recently won the Classic Rock Society "Best Guitarist" award for the second time, pipping a certain Mr. Hackett into second place. Do like this tune. Reminds me a bit of Khachaturian's Spartacus. There are I think a few musos on the forum who will know the type of guitar Chris uses (Custom PRS?). Regrettably the Point venue no longer exists. Some new flats were built close by and the tenants had second thoughts deciding they didn't want a live rock venue there. A great loss to local live music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sizoFXGqODs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sizoFXGqODs)
I posted this vid a while back of a Magenta studio cover of well-known prog tune. Went down rather well, even with the ultra hard-core Yes fans. The band's original material is unashamedly influenced by Yes (and Genesis).

It does remind of what I've heard of Buckethead indeed, but I'm not very familiar with everything BH has ever produced though. I should and will do my best to ensure this gets sorted over the weekend.

A mate of mine had a bootleg album years ago by an artist labelled Bruce Dylan. Plain white cardboard outer and a stuck on printed label. It was actually EC in concert from back in 1976/77 when he toured UK and SW States after his rehab. I long ago lost my tape recording of it. Last night I sat and spent several hours going over clips, archives, venue histories and music sharing sites and finally found what I was after.
It was actually a recording of his Nov 15 1976 concert in Dallas Texas made for radio airplay and not ever meant to be released as an album. In my opinion it is some of the best EC ever even if sound quality is a bit dodgy. His two female backup singers are brilliant, the band is on fire and EC is God. Marcy Levy and Yvonne Elliman each do a solo of "One Night With You" and "Cant Find My Way Home" respectively.
The Old Grey Whistle Test has a similar performance from around the same time, but definitely not as good, however Kitty Terry has remastered "Tell the Truth" for youtube and it is good. If you like EC check it out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adET5cMnrBo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adET5cMnrBo)
The recorded concert went:
Hello Old Friend, Sign Language, Badge (9.03), Knocking on Heavens Door, One Night With You, Tell The Truth (14.00), Cant Find My Way Home, Blues Power (13.00), Layla (12.33) and Further On Up The Road. What a blast to recover a long lost album that was a favourite.
181.44 MB file called ecl76mp.rar if you want it. It can't be piracy as it was never released commercially anyway. Well that's my thinking.
-
Absolutely, shame about the lossy format though. Cheers!

Well found Graeme (Phil will be proud of you). Funny the youtube links I found being pulled on copyright for a song from the early 60's. Anyway, Led Zepplin covered quite a few songs over their career. The Led Zepplin version of Babe, i'm gonna leave you is still my favourite version.

Like it TCB, Ive heard a few of theirs before and liked them, sounds like it should be from the TV series "Les revenants", I do like a bit of shoegaze after been in my element 89/90 upwards with the baggy Madchester sound ;) happy days
Edit - M83 Midnight City is what I remember them from mainly
-
Just listened to some more M83 TCB and I like them, do you have a favourite album/recommendation?
-
To be honest, pretty much all of his back catalogue. But the most 'accessibl e' album is probably 'Hurry up, we're dreaming'. Midnight city is on that album. Also check out an album called 'Outrun' by Kavinsky too.

I'm listening to a song from the 1980s but I don't have a clue what it is - not the song title, performing artist or anything. Is anyone here quite good with songs from that era? I tried playing it on song recognition software but they drew a blank. I also tried the input of whole chunks of the lyrics but that drew a blank, also. It's not the best song ever but it's bugging me because I don't know what it is. I recorded it on to a cassette myself in the 1980s, possibly the sound from a VHS video of hits. I've never really been into fringe artists so I'd expect it to be a reasonably mainstream artist.
What the best way of presenting the track here? Can I upload an mp3 file, or perhaps I could upload a "video" with sound only to vimeo. Or use dropbox? What's the best way?
-
Type some of the lyrics into google. That sometimes comes back with the answer.

Thank you for your interest and offers of help everyone. The people here are great. Last night I sent Gav Iscon the sound file and he found it within seconds! As he said:
"You didn't try hard enough George.
I got it googling 'All I am is loving you baby'"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1snPffX9do (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1snPffX9do)
I googled that phrase and several other lines of lyrics about 2 years ago, when I first converted my cassette into digital format. I can't understand how gooogle came up with the result for Gav Iscon, but not for me! It only reached no 58 in the chart in 1985 but I think it's quite catchy.
Has anyone here heard it before, and would you have known it, without searching for lyrics?
-
I would not have been able to help. Never heard it before.
-
I would not have been able to help. Never heard it before.
It was very good of you and others to offer to help - much appreciated.
As Gav (Stew) pointed out, the version I captured is a different mix, and I think it sounds better than the youtube version.
Here's another song I really rate - Take a Chance With Me by Roxy Music. Whoever wrote and arranged this track (Ferry?) is a genius. I think it's their best song. Typically I like just 3 or 4 songs from each artist. Anyway, here is Bryan Ferry live at Glastonbury in 2014.

Many thanks for these suggested tracks/videos, and to bamble1976 for his suggestions, too. I will download them all and hope to give them a fair chance - multiple plays. I did watch/listen to half of the last video and I still "don't get it". Other bands - a bit similar to Foo Fighters perhaps - where I can say I like at least 3 or 4 tracks include: Weezer, Metallica, Greenday and Linkin Park.

Too many good tracks by the Foo Fighters for me to pick 4 but as for the multi talented Dave Grohl, this is probably one of my favourite drumming tracks.

A bit of Big Country at the moment as they are playing at the football park not far from me. Only get it when the wind blows in the right direction though and the stage is facing the wrong way :)

Hey Garp, I'm old enough to remember that being a new song. How sad. :-\
My wife won 2 free tickets over the radio to go and see The Black Sorrows last Thursday night. Joe Camilleri has been gigging around since 1982 as Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and then later with The Black Sorrows. The band was a different lineup but still a great show. It was quite odd to be in a room full of old rocker fogies, either bald or grey heads and wrinkled older ladies. Then I remembered what I look like in the mirror these days. How sad. ;D

I know what you mean Livo :)
The Quo were the first concert I ever went to, 35 years ago, as a 17 year old .......
Still have the ticket stub lol -

My first known band concert was ACDC when they were first starting out back in early 70's. First international was Alice Cooper Welcome to my Nightmare tour a few years later. Seen a few acts since but SRV was a standout.

I'm so jealous, livo. I was born a few years too late to see some of the music I love being performed live at it's height or conception :)
Anyway, times move on. Loving this crazy woman now....parental guidance advised :)

Very recently I discovered the genius that is Sixto Rodriguez.. Actually his album Cold Fact has just finished and ABBA has just come on the music player, Mama Mia here we go again ;D

How funny it is to read this after over 2 years since the last post in this thread. I saw him live in Sydney in 1979. After the movie most would think he was only popular in South Africa. Actually the movie Searching for Sugarman is flawed. The bootleg albums that "found there way to South Africa" probably came from the surfing fraternity here is Australia. They weren't bootleg at all here. Everybody I knew had Cold Fact on vinyl.
I have found these guys pretty easy listening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYdvxBxHX2U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYdvxBxHX2U)
