Now that is a golden nugget :o. If it works, how easy garlic puree will be in future :D. 95% of time spent on it is pealing the little blighters >:(

That is amazing, I've just got to give this a go. Don't suppose it would work with ginger too? ;D

It is indeed, amazing, and it does work : I have just tried it (albeit with less than a full head). A few caveats -- it is essential that you can get a good comfortable grip on the basins (or whatever); I used a heavy aluminium casserole with Pyrex lid, and I found it difficult to hold and tiring to shake -- I got lactic acid build up way before the ten seconds was up. That apart, it definitely works, and is now incorporated into my chef's armoury of techniques.

;D ;D ;D ;D
You have NO idea how much that's begging for a Smart Alec "come back" Phil! :P :P :P
Change hands and you're probably good for another 10 seconds! ;D ;D ;D

"Change hands" ?! I'm already using two hands, and even those aren't really enough to get a good grip !

What en excellent tip, very good timesaver. Will try it asap!

Great to hear that this works :) I'm looking forward to giving it a go myself ;D

lactic acid....is that maybe the "secret" ingredient we've all allegedly been missing
-
Just tried this again, this time using a whole head of garlic and the smallest of my non-stick saucepans (with glass lid) as the shaker : much more comfortable to hold, managed 50 repetitions before tiredness ensued, and over 90% success rate. Removed all those that were done, gave the remainder 30 repetitions, and all perfect. This is going to be such a time saver !
Now, who is going to invent "how to peel a whole root of ginger in ten seconds" ?
** Phil.

.
WOW!!! You see some tips and you think that's not going to work... well this one definitely does... Thanks for the heads up currymonster, nice one ;D
Rob.

Yup, tried this today and can confirm that it 100% works ;D
Whole bulb de-skinned in 10 seconds :)
Now to get some of my life back...many thanks to the OP 8)

Great find CM!
It works a treat! How could such a Top Tip be kept so secret for so long!? :o
I peeled several whole bulbs, simultaneously, in around 30 seconds total (shaking once to peel around 80% of the cloves and twice to peel the remainder).
I used a stainless steel stock pot with lid.
When I can find the "whisk" attachment, for my Mini Whiz, I'll try using that...it might save the lactic acid build up, in the arms, Phil! :P
Thanks for finding it and posting it CM 8)
PS: This thread would probably be easier for others to find if it was moved to a more relevant section though (e.g. "hint and tips"). It took me 15 minutes to find it and I knew what I was looking for! :P

God, I feel terrible. I spent upwards of 20 mins (or more, didn't clock it) peeling 400 grams of garlic for a new batch of g&g. Just when I thought that diving the garlic cloves into the water was already a great advance in the art of peeling garlics.... this one really takes the cake! Next time... ;-)

More to the point - who is going to invent - " how to deseed 400 caradamon pods in 30 seconds " would be of more use. .................... and Phil - why do you peel yer garlic? Not necessary for most uses. Just remove the odd knobbly gnurly bits. ( the garlic - not you) ;)

No need, old chap : I can buy the insides as easily as the complete thing.

Urk : the only place I would even /consider/ using unpeeled garlic is in a base that will subsequently be mouli'd/sieved ...

Already powdered you mean?

You old stick in the mud ;) if anything needs blending then what is the noticeable difference? if it has to be put through sieve , of course, no difference. Only point remains = there is something horrid about the skin? Do you eat jacket pots? new pots with skin on? Is this a texture thing? Do you have a thing about ginger skin? Are you gingerist? ;) ;D ::)
-
Do you eat jacket pots?
Only the insides.
new pots with skin on?
Not if I can avoid it, but just occasionally with (e.g.,) a lamb leg steak and garden peas (needs lots of Brittany butter).
Is this a texture thing?
Absolutely !
Do you have a thing about ginger skin?
Only on pussy cats.
Are you gingerist? ;) ;D ::)
Ask Jaffa : he will assure you "only in the most positive sense".

Now that bugger WOULD look good in a pan!! ;)
You'd be sadly disappointed : he has only three legs (since May 2012), so after your wife and two kids had their share, there'd be none left for you :) P.S. Jaffa says "We are not amused" :

Still looks very Tarka ' ish ( or does that bring in the oldest joke in the book about Tarka just being 'otter ? ) ????? ;)

This is an older post but this may also help:
Throw a kids' rubber ball or something similar into the bowl at the start - it helps knock the skins off as they all crash into it. ;)

Martin

I tried it with some fresh garlic from ASDA and it didn't work. The garlic head is easy to break into cloves (I already know how to do that) but the purplish-coloured garlic cloves seem to have very sticky skin. I resorted to my usual method of bashing the head to release the cloves then cutting the blunt end off ecah clove and bashing them all again to release the skins. If you watch a Jamie Oliver video he often just sticks each clove into a garlic press, skin and all - the skin doesn't go through the holes. If you're gong to blend it anyway, WTH, a bit of skin doesn't matter.
-
Bittergourd I suggest you get the guns out and give it a proper shake for atleast 2 minutes for a whole bulb. Don't be shy

What is the reason for the "?cmpid=fb" parameter, Chris; the following appears to work perfectly well by itself :

No idea Phil, I was fascinated by the idea so followed the link (on an iPad) and it didn't work for me, so after some googling found and copied the next link which worked for me (again on an iPad maybe the original still works on a PC)
Anyway, the bottom line is that I put 3 cloves of garlic in my smallest saucepan put the lid on, shook it violently about 10 times and bingo! 3 perfectly skinless cloves. So to others posting earlier in the thread, no waste of a whole bulb and shaking a small saucepan 10 times didn't tire my wrist 😉
it was a bit quick though! 😂
-
OK, it would seem to be a tracking parameter ("I came from Facebook" [spit]). As to three cloves v. a whole head, yes, fewer work fine, but I think the original idea was to peel as many cloves as possible at once !
