I suggest a bit more info is needed to be sure we're all talking about the same recipes. What is the one described simply as  'curry gravy'? And where is Kris Dhillon's 'Curry Secret' recipe for base sauce? Surely, that one should be included in the poll.

Furthermore, is it possible to clarify the poll question, please? We're asked to "Vote for the one you have had the best result with...You may only select up to 10 options." I'm confused! Vote for one or up to ten items?

Regards
George

George,

I have re-set it so you can only vote once now which should be better in the long run.
The essence of this poll is so anyone new can get an idea of which curry base perhaps they should start with out of the many on this site avaiable.

I doubt its going to be an exact science. ;D

Like trying to decide on your favorite beer , sample them all once ( or twice ) then formulate an opinion . If you are still in doubt , do more research . ;D

Yes I wouldn't read too much into it, for a start to give an accurate vote you would have to have tried them all and compared them, how many of us have done that as I know I havn't.? Personally I voted for 3 of the recipes because I felt that they more than any others have helped me get where I am now even if I no longer use them all.? I'm still of the opinion that there is no correct base recipe but this poll should give new users an idea of which one\s to go for first.

I think Bruce Edwards recipes were a real breakthrough
But since then, I have never seen the following curries cooked his way
None start with frying peppers
He doesn't mention prefried onion (which are in loads of meals)
Not a word about curry gravy oil
And the roghan josh is like no dish I have ever bought
It's nice, but not right
I made the korma for my kids' once
There were in love with the meal from the takeaway, butI got a total thumbs down
We have better recipes on this site now

Hi Admin  :),

I think the intent behind this poll is great!  8)

However, as several other people here have commented, I also feel unable to vote because I have only tried 1 out of the 25 Curry Base recipes on here!  :o  I feel that my vote would therefore be a little misleading!  :P  So, I have a suggestion to make??

?..would it be more effective (if it?s not too hard to implement) to change things a bit to enable people to rank (on a scale of 1 to 5, for example) the recipes they?ve tried.  A running total of votes cast for each recipe can also be maintained (plenty of other web sites do something similar).  I know that I?d then rank the recipe I?ve already tried and return to rank others, when I?ve tried them, in the future.  Maybe more people would do so too?

What do you think?  :-\

PS:  The same system could be used to rank other recipes too?

I agree with you here Les I think that would be a great idea if possible, it would also allow new recipes to be added and rated along with the tried and trusted.

I totally agree with the former comments , but with one caveat - that all recipes submitted have a  concise form of weights & measures indicated . That way , everyone can hopefully reproduce a similar taste .

all recipes submitted have a  concise form of weights & measures indicated

And whether level or rounded or heaping spoons.
And what brands of curry powder, garam masala, and curry pastes were used.

Good to see some support for the idea  :)

I've been thinking about it a bit more ( :o) and offer a couple of suggestions for ranking systems that might be appropriate:

Firstly, to keep things really simple, rank the recipe, from 1 to 5, according to the following (or, obviously, alternative) descriptions:

1 - Shocking!  Even my local chippy would be ashamed to serve this!  :o
2 ?  Poor!  My local chippy might serve this - if they thought they?d get away with it!  :'(
3 ?  Satisfactory!  Could eat this again; beats the hell out of fish ?n chips!  :-\
4 -  Good!  Hey, I?d be proud to serve this to my friends - AND admit that I made it!  :)
5 ? Excellent!  Even my favourite BIR would be proud to serve this!  ;D

Secondly, another suggestion, for a slightly more rigorous (and complex  ::)!) system is to rate the recipe, according to certain attributes.  For example, rank the recipe, from 1 to 5 (the same descriptions as above could be used), for each of the following attributes:

a)   Appearance  (1 :o to 5 ;D)
b)   Taste (1 :o to 5 ;D)
c)   Smell (1 :o to 5 ;D)
d)   Similarity to BIR (1 :o to 5 ;D)
e)   Clarity and accuracy of recipe (1 :o to 5 ;D)

A grand total (in this case, to a maximum of 25), could then be given.  Obviously, other attributes could also be used instead.  A section for comments and total number of votes cast could be included.

Hope this is helpful?   :-\  (now, all that remains is the hard work!  ;))

See what you think?

Shocking!  Even my local chippy would be ashamed to serve this!

I'm guessing that "chippy" is British slang for a fish-and-chips shop.  In American slang, "chippy" means something else indeed.  Although, I'm sure some of them have served awful curries, too. ;)

Over here, I don't think 'chippy' has a bad meaning :)

Apart from a chip shop, it is also a slang term for a carpenter or someone who works with wood.

... And where is Kris Dhillon's 'Curry Secret' recipe for base sauce? Surely, that one should be included in the poll ...
I second that.  It may be that all those that "Admin" selected are indeed better than Kris's, but there can be no doubt that Kris's does produce an authentic flavour, so surely deserves to be included.  My two penn'orth !

Haven't been on for quite a while, bloody computer keeps freezing!
Think need new 1
Anyway my vote has to go to Darth's BIR 100% clone
I have tried the NATCO base and it turned out really well
my wife thought it was the best 1 i've made!
With a little work i think it could be greatly improved

How can your vote be valid unless you've tried them all. If you're considering choosing one to ,make, you're probably going to go for the one that already has the most votes. The gap between the frontrunners and the rest will just get wider, surely.

I have to agree with you After8, mine will keep getting more votes because new members will obviously try the recipe with the most votes first & they will make a very good curry & may not try any others.
Those of us who have been members for many a Moon on the other hand have had a go at most on the list.
So i urge everyone new or fairly new to the forum to give the others a go or send Pm's to other long standing members & ask their opinions of which bases are amongst the best.
I for one don't want to see other very good bases get lost into obscurity because there are several which are very good indeed & deserve trying, get into those Kitchens & experiment peeps. :)

What happens if we've already voted, and then find a base we like better than the one we voted for?  That hasn't happened to me, but I expect it will when I try Darth's base. :)

Hi Merry.
If you look at the poll results showing the recipes & how many votes they have you should see next to the one you originally voted for some text saying Remove Vote, i think you click on that & it will remove your vote only so you can vote for another.
Hope this is of some help, I'm sure the admins will clarify this better.  :)

Ive tried three base sauces with Darths being the first one. After struggling to make anything that resembled BIR i must say this was the best id ever made even the missus thought it was great and i didnt get the feeling she was just being polite. Ive made a rushed  curry since when out of base sauce and used celery, carrotts and onion with madras recipes and found the results very good. The 2nd base i made was ifindforu. Must say was very dissapointed with this one. Missus only ate a mouthful before turning her nose up and i must admit i wasnt keen either and i can usually eat anything that resembles a curry but still it could have been something i had done wrong but cant pick up on anything. Just made the sns base and the colour and smell are fantastic going to knock a madras together tonight and v optimistic
