Really sorry for the delay everyone.
Downloaded two episodes yesterday afternoon in about 15-20 mins no problem.
Compressed them down to 20mb a piece to get them uploaded fast for people to see but then the problems started.
Youtube would not recognise the format even though it was correct. tried a few times then gave up.
Tried with the full video which took forever. Looked like it worked only to see there was only 18 secs worth after hours of uploading. >:(
OK, lets try vimeo. The flash or something crashed THREE times at around 90 odd % after a very long upload time (100mb each file) :'( >:(
Managed to get one completed before it crashed again just before going to bed and set up the other to go overnight.
Vimeo had crashed again but Luckily. . After it had uploaded! ;)
So, hopefully,, here are the episodes for people to watch who dont have sky.

Way to go Frank, excellent vid's my friend, and thanks for taking the time to do them, Should keep everyone happy ;D
Sorry Frank, should have put remark into the other thread ::)

Not convinced Vimeo won't pull them, Frank : they have a fairly strict policy that all material must be owned by the submitter and not cloned from copyright material. Maybe Dropbox would be a better host : they won't be streamable, but at least (AFAIK) Dropbox don't insist on "Own material only", unlike Vimeo.

Whatever happens, thanks for taking the time to do this for the benefit of us all Frank.

no problem Les, i'll just ask George to add the links to the first post. ;)

Thats ok Phil, I'm not too bothered. As long as some members get a chance to see them, thats good enough for me. ;) and it saves everyone from having to download them themselves.
-
Thanks Dalpuri
Some intersesting stuff in there. Better than working on a dull afternoon. I'm sure it'll be pulled soon, so get in there while you can people.
-
Thanks for taking the trouble to do this, Frank - nice one! :)
-
Thanks very much for making this available!
-
Thank you very much!!
-
Thanks for taking the time to put those up , much appreciated.
Mr. Mumtaz had an unusual method, no base gravy.

This was his mums method for home-cooked curries, not a BIR technique.

Do you mean the two video links in your post at 2.05.46 today. Would you like those links copied into the first post (yours presumably) in this thread here, i.e. "Madhur Jaffrey's Curry Nation"?
Incidentally, I input the password and it moved to a black video window with "private" in red, diagonally across the top left hand corner. Nothing played. I couldn't see any buttons to make it play. Then I clicked 'download' but nothing happened there either. Where might I be going wrong?
-
No "Play" button ("|>") and no action on "Download" (="javascript:void (0)") suggests you may have Javascript disabled in your browser, George.

Thanks. Third time lucky for me. I can now play and download, using my Mozilla Firefox browser. Originally I used Chrome on which I have Java disabled as my starting point for general browsing. Then I either enable Java for sites I want to trust, or switch to Internet Explorer. Neither worked for Vimeo for some reason.
It's so good of DalPuri to have uploaded these videos.

I meant any further links as the series progresses.
Nobody has uploaded episode 3 yet. :-\ If no further episodes are uploaded, i will copy them myself from my friends sky box. (he has them on series record for me)
Frank. :)

Thanks for doing this, from Oz.

Thank you very much,DalPuri.
I'm watching now
-
In anticipation that no more episodes were going to be uploaded i bought a small capture/converter cable from ebay so i could transfer the episodes from my mates skybox for you all to watch. :)
It arrived in the post today. Was only a fiver so no big loss if it doesn't work.
Right now i see that episodes 3, 4 and 5 have been uploaded ::) :P
I'll get on the case at some point this weekend and get the links up.
Cheers, Frank. :)

Indeed they have, but with a ratio of only 0.11:1, I am not sure I should risk downloading them ! If you do grab them, would you be able to make them available via (say) Dropbox in their original PDTV/Xvid format ?
** Phil.

I'm doing it this way so it doesn't take me an age to upload.
Quality is compromised but its better than nothing and i've only compressed to 90mb from 188mb.
The video's are quite dark to begin with anyway so you wouldn't be gaining much even if i did upload them in full.
When i get the full series from my friends sky box i'll see what i can do, but for now you'll just have to watch them on vimeo.

OK, understood. Will risk going into ratio-hell and download them anyway, in case someone else would like them uncompressed. I /may/ be able to lighten them, but no promises.

Patience Phil. :) I'll get them out there eventually.
Reminds me of when i set up free live football for a mate on his MacTV. More thrifty than me! A proper Arthur Daley. :D
It was a few years ago now so the picture wasnt great but still Very watchable. He refused to watch live games because the quality wasn't perfect. ::) But Arfa, its FREE!! Free live footy on a saturdee afternoon without puttin more money into Murdoch's pocket does it for me. ;)
Speaking of which . . .I'm off ;D
-

Got 'em :) And ratio only down to 0.096 from 0.11, so not too bad a penalty.

Reminds me of how I watch a certain pay-for channel to this day : take unencrypted digital beam from one satellite, with sound track in language L1 (not English), take encrypted digital beam from second satellite, with choice of language L2 and L3 (where L3 is English), extract English sound from latter and mix with video signal from former. Admittedly there is about a 2-second synch error, which does make sports such as snooker and show jumping a little less exciting than they would otherwise be (because you know from the audio audience reaction whether the shot has succeeded or a fence been knocked down two seconds before you see it for yourself), but at least you have access to over 2000 channels and pay for none :)

I used to stand in my garden looking through the kitchen window at a small portable b&w tv whilst tweaking my analogue satellite dish to get the german channels ;D

The chef in Vid 2 (the 7min curry job) Say's that he never uses a gravy pot, and all his dishes are done fresh, So is he implying that all his dishes are made the same way as his mother used to make them?? everything thrown into the wok first, Except the spices of course.

And that deeply coloured spiced oil full of eastern promise. :D
p.s.
once again my apologies for the delay of the rest of the vids. compressed, converted and uploaded the next 3 episodes yesterday without checking them ::) :(
All 3 had a double audio track on them!! Had to delete them and start again. ::)
Would be a lot quicker if vimeo/chrome didnt keep crashing just before they finished uploading! >:(

No worries, there done, when there done. ;D

Almost certainly not. They use those Chinese cookers that sound and look like an afterburner of a Mig jet! With that amount of heat you can easily cook from scratch in minutes.
I tried a curry with the throw-it-all-in method and it produced what I expected a thin, 'Pakistani' type curry. It was perfectly edible and quite pleasant but was watery due to the onions not being pureed (I chopped them finely).

I prefer chicken... :)

Finally watched Madhurs last episode this morning "Goan Cuisine"
At the end she cooks a Pork Vindaloo in a Pressure Cooker and admits to using her pressure cooker all the time, cooking at home in New York. KUDOS
(She naturally uses an expensive Kuhn Rikon PC on the show.)
I've enjoyed watching this series, but don't quite get why the behind the scenes of Bangladeshi BIR kitchens were missed out.
She talked about them, but didn't actually show any. Very odd when you consider 90% of BIR are Bangladeshi run and it's the main cuisine in our English Curry Nation.
I think it maybe, Taking India as a whole, Bangladeshis are thought of as way down
the pecking order. Any thoughts?
Anyhoo for me, the series was better than expected and good TV.
cheers Chewy
-
Hi
She did coment that the majority of BIR's are run by Bangladesh's cooking Punjabi food.
Regards
-
Yes she did mention them but didn't go to any that I can remember and missed a large majority of where we all go for the last 30 or more years. In the programs it was a Glasgow chippy, a pub then places where the queen would go. Then went to say, let me show you how to make chicken tikka with some methods from home and called it a mix of west and home. If she went to a few curry houses I'm sure she wouldn't look down or think we're missing out becasue she would she that these places do use and do what she did and more. Many brits cook currys at home the same way she did (not this forum and BIR) but currys from scratch.
I did enjoy the series, the market stuff was nice to see. Perhaps the series was just about extremes but would like to hear what she thought of what's available by sampling a few takeaways and smaller restaurants around the cities. it's not all oil and beer with pre-prepared curry from factories. People are actually enjoying some nice stuff with actual ingredients. Even sampling a few more chippys would be good as they vary quite a lot.
-
Thanks for uploading the rest of the series, too !
-
I wateched the first five eoisodes a few weeks ago and sure there was a Bangladesh episode. don't think there was anything against Bangladesh but they show everything outside normal takeaways and restaurants.
-
Hi All,
I've tried a few times to retrieve the series from my friends sky box but having trouble with capture software. As long as he has the space on his hard drive i'll keep trying. ;) in particular, episode 10.
In the meantime, here's a little bonus i found.
Cheers, Frank. :)

Thanks for the link to the cooking show Dai, very interesting. I was intrigued not only by the cooking & spices info, but by the style of the production which was new to me (maybe it's common in the US). The entertaining mix of cookery blended with a story line and edited much more like a comedy-drama show than the stilted documentary/reality style of a typical uk cooking show was quite engaging. Maybe some would find it a little brash and overdone, but an interesting departure from the norm in this country anyway.
-
Can you please put the special on a different host ? It says I need to be premium to download it.

I didn't upload that link myself Stonecut, it's just a direct streaming link. I rarely download any video these days if i can help it. Streaming all the way for me! :)
Just be ready for the pop-ups. ;) No prob for me though with Chrome + Flashblock + Adblock.
Cheers, Frank. :)

I never did manage to get episode 10 of this series. My mates sky box died and everything was wiped. ::)
Have searched again tonight online after a PM request, but still nothing uploaded.
Anyway, here's a short clip from that episode.
