Trainee Chefs / Beginners Questions / Re: MSG

MSG really 'makes' a chilli dish. It's great at taking away the tanginess of tomato dishes and, of course, it's great for giving you colourful and vivid dreams. Personally, I believe it adds a lot of character to a dish, but you need to experiment and find out which dishes it works with, and which dishes it doesn't. It's magic!   ;D

ahhhh, 1 kid! Blisss!!  ;D

The vegan doughnuts turned out the same. I only used 1 x 7g pack of yeast and slightly reduced the other ingredients. Used rice milk and soy butter, and mixed the yeast in with the milk (as opposed to water) and a little sugar and flour.

Top stuff! I really need to lay off the doughnuts for a while though, we've eaten 45 between us this weekend, lol  :o

4 kids, domi  :-X  My partner's vegan so I'm on a dairy-free doughnut mission today, using rice milk, soy butter, and soy flour as egg substitute.  :-\

Thanks Domi, I made about 23 doughnuts with this recipe and they went down a storm with the kids...so much so that the last 5 doughnuts have just been snatched from the plate.  ;D  They tasted a little 'yeasty' to me, so I've probably not given the dough enough time to rise (or maybe didn't knead for long enough). All in all a riproaring success.

Thanks again   ;D

Just in the process of making these right now. You were right about the amount of flour needed. Had to use considerably more than recipe stated. Looking good so far, just waiting for dough to double and rummaging around for a bottle top to cut some holes.  ;D

Aren't Pasco's an offshoot of Pataks? Disgruntled ex-employees or something I seem to remember having heard.

I think you're right. This is what I was told: upon the death of the founder, the business was handed down to his sons, so the daughters broke away and founded Pasco. Not 100% sure whether this is correct.

Thanks Stephen...cooking the day before, then having a second day curry, sounds great. You know: I get stressed when trying to prepare meals for a hungry family - especially 6 groaning and moaning people   ::) And you're right, I'd have more time to prepare rice, chutneys, bhajis (we're big fans) and nan/chapati. I would love to prepare 4 main meals, so everyone can dip into each and have some variety. Cooking for one is heaven...cooking for 6 is swaety and stressful business...I respect our bir chefs!!
