Mishti Desh, Coventry Road, Birmingham

Been here several times recently for lunch and treated to some exceptional food.  A well-established smart decor cafe-type restaurant, with all the usual BIR faves on the menu, but also specialising in traditional handi-cooked Bengali cuisine.  I have yet to try out their Madras, Pathia, CTM, etc., but have to mention this place for anyone who visits the Birmingham area.  Highly recommended.  Yesterday I just had lamb samosa with salad, but what a samosa.  They have an extensive all-you-can-eat buffet every day, with TA options.  I went for the meat curry and rice option, and selected a Lamb bhuna with plain basmati rice.  This consisted of a large type plastic TA tray containing approximately half rice/half curry (

Look good Authentic places Rob,
Nice to see a Bangladeshi run BIR serving Bangladeshi food as well as the norm.
Probably a huge Bangladeshi community in the area.
They must have good kitchens, with plenty of staff, to produce all this variety.

I think your main problem with all this, is you only have one stomach ;D ;D

BTW. One I would avoid is the Hilsa fish,  I've never come across a fish with so many bones. :'(

Looking forward to your reviews.

cheers Chewy

Good grub last night Chewy, but slipped up with the byriani.  Looked nice with the boiled egg on top, but was made with arborio style rice.  Had something similar once made as a staff curry. Considered quite a delicacy it seems. Very little in the way of spicing for these dishes though, including the meat, and not really my cup of tea.  Tasted bland, and all went in the bin, except for the egg.  So I ended up paying 4 quid for a bloomin' boiled egg!  Top notch fish though, and the lads had also included a complementary small portion of dal, which was absolutely lush.  Back to the Mishti later.  Craving for some more of their lamb bhuna. Fingers crossed it's on today.  Will keep an eye out for the Hilsa.

Rob  :)

I think if I went to Mishti, I would watch what the Bangladeshi customers
are choosing and follow suit, but I would definitely try the Shutki dishes.

My Authentic Bangladeshi - plate of food.
While I was visiting a friend the other day on his brothers Mendi,(Bachelor Day)
his Mother asked him if I would like to eat, didn't have to ask me twice.

Grabbed a spot in the garden and got stuck in.
Sheep Biryani, Salad, Coconut pitha/idli, Kati Roll and a Beef Sheek Kebab.

All very enjoyable except the Kati Roll, which wasn't to my taste.
Later on, I found out that this meal was just a kind of Brunch, a stop gap, before the main feast later in the day.

Which I missed :'(

cheers Chewy
