Thanks Ashes, this is interesting.

I guess you all know that Turmeric is used in vedic medicine as an astringent mainly, but has many healing properties.  Most Indians put it on cuts and burns, like we used to use Iodine I guess.

My mother suffers from sever arthritis and has done so for many years, my mother in law suffers from fibromyalgie which is a very strange illness vaguely related to arthritis, so i was interested to read the article. I hope this will help you, a lot of people presume curries are bad for your health, and the amount of fat probably doesnt help, but i usually feel pretty damn good after a curry and all those strange and exotic spices must be doing something!

A lot of stuff that makes us healthy is stuff we dont wanna eat, nice to see something that we already like, doing something positive instead of negative.  :)

Absolutely both.  Pat Chapman wrote a brilliant treatise on the medical benefits of curries in his first book back in the 60's.  If anyone is interested I can dig a load of stuff out of home library of herbal remedies etc., which will really enlighten you on all of the ingredients used in curries.  A lot of the basic medicines today are based on the extracts of spices.

hi all
turmeric is a wonder spice used to contain bleeding of minor cuts, it is an antiseptic, an anaesthetic and it is used in the treatment of some cancers or the property curcimmin is. it also can make food edible that is not. i bouhht an indian recipe book at a bootfair for 50p it gives quite  alot about other spices and their medicinal qualities.it also says that an indian chef is taught how to use them in cooking and medically. turmeric also stops you feeling nauseus and reduces inflamation.

i love this spice ;)

regards
gary

Strangely I was told by a doctor that ginger is bad for arthritis! (yet the two plants are quite closely related).

Just my 2p worth
