Where do you buy tomatoes?
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:00 PM »
Has anyone noticed (I can't see how you couldn't), just how crap the tomatoes are in the supermarkets. I mean bad to the point of being inedible. I find that I have to buy Tesco (for example) finest on the vine tomatoes to even approximate the taste of a good tomato.

Who actually cooks, and god forbid eats raw, the cheapest tomatoes that they sell?

I cannot stand the supermarket tomatoes - unless they're for cooking. Unless you pay a fortune for them, they're so watery and no taste.

I always look forward to the Summer when I get to pick my own cherry tomatoes from the greenhouse. My favourite varieties are, Harlequin, Sakura F1, Honey Jade F1 and funningly enough "Santa F1" , all sweet and succulent bite size toms. Far too good for cooking.

Yup.

A cherry tomato named after you - and one of the nicest varieties.  ;)

Supermarket tomatoes are just terrible , no flavour , and not very juicy , I like to grow my own tomatoes , I like Roma's , they are nice and sweet and flavoursome.

I bought a packet of moneymakers from Woolworths. No idea what to do with em, I'll stick em in some soil and see how it goes.

Standard size tomato, heavy cropper. Used by many gardeners as stock choice as it is a reliable variety with good resistance to disease. Great choice for beginners.
