Recipe book suggestions
« on: December 28, 2009, 04:45 PM »
An earlier discussion about Indian Cookbooks suggested that the old BBC Madhur Jaffrey book, Indian Cooking, was perhaps not so inspiring as there were no pictures in it. I have used my old dog eared copy for many years now but noticed in Waterstones this week that the BBC have reissued it in hard back in a larger format and it now has many photos in it.
The book is a treasure house of authntic Indian recipes and I have found it inspirational for many years.

Just bought Parsi Food and Customs by Bhicoo Manekshaw.

Saw her on TV recently, I think on the Rick Stein series when he went around the East.

Looked her up and bought this book. Lots of good stuff to try.

I agree. The first Indian recipes I ever tried were from this book and I still find them hard to beat. The very first Indian dish I ever cooked was 'Lemony Chicken with Coriander' after seeing Madhur Jaffrey make it on BBC TV in 1982 or thereabouts.

I made this recipe again last week and it still tastes good. I then tried it again, a couple of days later, using masses of fresh parsley which I had, instead of masses of fresh coriander leaves and stalks, which I'd exhausted. The delicious original dish was turned into something relatively tasteless - it didn't taste of parsley, it just tasted of nothing. It just goes to show how the change of one ingredient can make a huge difference. I'll post a photo later.
